USE OF CORPORAL PUNISHMENT
Introduction Corporal punishment (CP) is the use of physical force with the intention of causing a child to experience pain but not injury for thepurposes of correction or control of the child's behavior. Corporal punishment could adversely affect cognitive ability. Being slapped or spanked is a frightening and threatening event that children experience ashighly stressful. Fright and stress can result in cognitive deficits such aserroneous or limited coding of events and diminished elaboration.
The aim of the study was to identify the use of corporal and to correlate between using of corporal punishment and parents demographic variables.
Methodology
The study was conducted at 20 from ilac student and then collected the data from the questionnaire .
It includes two parts:
Part 1: included demographic data such as age, sex, education, occupation, number of children.
Part 2: included questions related to uses of corporal punishment by the fathers and mothers.
Results
Although 59% of participants agreed that CP is not the ideal methods and 75% of them consider it as violence against children, 80% of them use corporal punishment with their children. CP is used more with small number of children with significant difference for breaking toys, dealing violently with others, refusing to eat and misbehaving with adults.
Conclusion and recommendation
The study found that 80% of participants reported using of CP either always or sometimes with their children. Practitioners should encourage parents to avoid using CP as a disciplinary method which could lead to achange in the attitudes and behaviors of the next generation of
