Use Of Irony In The Labyrinth
Authors use irony to make stories more exciting.
To begin, in the movie The Labyrinth, there was some verbal irony. Verbal irony is when a character says something that they don’t really mean. The first example of verbal irony was when Sara referred to the labyrinth as a “piece of cake” while she was truly having many difficulties. Another was when Hoggle the goblin said that he could never hurt Sara, but he still gave her the poisonous peach anyway. And finally the last was Hoggle said he didn't want any friends, but he did, and he was happy when Sara said that she forgave him.
Another type of irony that authors use is dramatic irony. Dramatic irony is when the audience knows more than the characters. The first example of dramatic irony

Irony, in literature can be anything from sarcasm to a shocking plot twist that can be inconvenient to the characters toward the end. A type of irony is situational which is where something very unexpected shows up at the last minute making the outcome of the story completely different then you expected. Such as the one in Lord of the Flies that effects one special character named Simon, and really almost all the characters.…

The short stories “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allen Poe and “Young Goodman Brown” by Nathaniel Hawthorne use verbal irony to elaborate the text. Both short stories explain the verbal type of irony. Verbal irony is a situation in which a character says the opposite of what he or she means. Verbal irony is not always shown in the text directly. The reader most of the time has to continue reading until the end of the passage, to actually see if it was verbal irony instead of a different type of irony.…

Verbal Irony is a concept that is defined as the use of words to express something different from and often opposite to their real meaning. The verbal irony is close to sarcasm. An example of verbal irony is given in this quote: “I remember that why I left this group seven years ago and it’s why I am leaving now. Good day ladies.” Although Marge become angry and left the group, she said, “Good day.” Actually, she did not really mean that. There is another example about verbal irony that…

There are various examples in which the dramatic irony is explicit. The King has high expectations of the deeds that Macbeth is going to fulfill. He trusts Macbeth and he has just been assigned to be Thane of Cawdor. “He was a gentleman on whom I built an absolute trust”. The King is referring to the former Thane of Cawdor who betrayed him, he’s committing the same mistake twice, but he seems to be too naïve, not considering the fact that maybe Macbeth can betray him too. Macbeth is not planning on doing so yet, but he is being tempted to. The…

Verbal, situational and dramatic, three types of irony, are commonly used by authors in their literary works to grab the attention of the readers. Verbal irony refers to when a character says something contradictory to what he means, situational irony is when the audience believes something will happen but a different scenario occurs, and dramatic irony is when the audience knows what is happening but the characters do not. In the short story “The Mark of the Beast,” the author, Rudyard Kipling, makes great use of all three types of irony. In paragraph nine on page two the narrator states, “He was gorgeously drunk” this is an example of verbal irony because the narrator did not actually mean that Fleete was gorgeous; He used the positive connotation…

Irony makes a really good story because it lets you discover a lot about a character and if he is good or bad, gonna do something to someone or help someone, and the personality of the character. For example writer Van Tomphson on his website says “This approach to irony can help the reader gain insight into each character's personality. A character who is frequently sarcastic or dishonest might be a person who should not be trusted or who is going to harm another character.” Irony can also give you insight one what will happen in a story kind of like foreshadowing. Like in the book The Gift of Magi the two characters Della and Jim are very poor and what to give each other Christmas presents. So unknowingly to each other they both sell one of there most prized possessions to get the money. Jim sells his watch to buy Della a comb, yet Della sells her hair to buy Jim a new chain for his watch. You can…

One example of verbal irony is when Catesby is trying to convince Hastings to join Richard in his attempt to take the thrown. He says, “The Princes both make high account of you/ [aside] For they account his head upon the bridge” (3. 2. 71-72). Catesby is referring to Richard and Buckingham having high regard for Hastings. What he says aside is ironic because in those days, the heads of traitors would be displayed high up in the London Bridge. They don’t hold him in high regard as a person; they are hoping to hold his head high on the bridge.…

For instance, when Nora at one point A Doll’s House says to Helmer that, in whatever he does, he is always right, she is consciously ironical. She does not really mean to say that Helmer is always right in what he does. In fact she means just the opposite. Helmer, of course, does perceive the irony in her remark; he takes her remark literally and feels happy in the belief that she has paid him a compliment. But we perceive irony, and feel amused because actually she means to say that Helmer is seldom right in what he does. Irony is unconsciously employed when we say something without knowing or realizing that the opposite of what he has said will prove to be the case. In such a case of the use of irony, we become aware of irony only afterwards when the opposite of what was said actually takes place. It is only on the second reading that we become aware of such cases of irony. Thus we may say that irony arises from a contrast between hat a character ay and hat he really mean to convey, between hat a character believe and what he knows to be actually the case, between hat a character think he will do or achieve and hat he really in the long run doe or achieve. Irony may produce a comic effect or a tragic effect,…
