Imagery is a portrait that is painted in your mind, a portrait that makes you feel you are there. The Holocaust is full of disturbing and horrible images of death. Pictures of inhumanity that just make you sick looking at them. In many images you see the pale, unemotional faces whose lives were changed for eternity, and yet with these images some believe that the Holocaust did not happen. In the Holocaust there was mass genocide of over six million Jews. Also many ethnic Poles, gypsies, Soviet civilians, Soviet prisoners of war, disabled people, homosexual men, and political and religious opponents were targeted by the Nazis to be exterminated. Hitler’s ultimate goal during the Holocaust was to ensure the creation of an Arian race. Fortunately the Holocaust was ended in 1945 when Germany was defeated. There were many survivors of the Holocaust, one of them being Elie Wiesel. He would later write a novel called Night, which is about his life experiences during the Holocaust. There are many powerful and telling pieces of imagery in the novel Night, such being Elie’s first day at Auschwitz, the hanging of the child at the gallows, and Juliek’s last symphony.…
They always say that the pen is mightier than the sword. In Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s case, however, the phrase would have the be “the adlib is mightier than the sword” in regards to his incredibly famous “I Have A Dream” speech, which contained many metaphors with great imagery. King used imagery and metaphors to powerfully represent his ideas on the discrimination in America during the 1960’s. One example of King’s imagery in metaphors is when he proclaims that they would “be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood.”…
As a teacher dedicated to consider how children think, feel, and understand their world, I am like a good book. Like a good book, once you get started and really get into it, you start thinking about it when you are not even reading it. I want to become the main focus point of my students’ attention. I want them to always be interested in what they are about to learn, but also very excited about what is coming next. A good book helps people solve problems they might be having and inspire people to do great things both academically and personally.…
Metaphors are another useful rhetorical method that King uses, metaphors are important to help audiences fully understand an idea as it compares an idea with something the audience is familiar with, which is important to bring out ethos. King uses a series of more difficult metaphors in the middle of his speech. He claims that by “the Constitution and Declaration of Independence,” the men that signed the Constitution were signing a promissory note that all men, whatever skin color, would be guaranteed the same rights and treated equally. Later on, King uses the metaphors “battered by the storms of persecution” and the “winds of police brutality.” (American rhetoric 2) These two metaphors both relate to ethos as the first metaphor begs the ethic…
“The Writer” by Richard Wilbur makes use of metaphors and poetic devices such as assonance to show the journey of a girl’s struggles to overcome the obstacles of adolescence and gain independence. This poem uses two metaphors to convey its message. The first metaphor is comparing the girl’s journey to a journey across the sea. The daughter is writing “in her room at the prow of the house”, so her house is like her ship (1). The typewriter keys sound “like a chain hauled over a gunwale”, a sound you would hear if you were voyaging at sea (6). Even her typing is like the motion of rowing, “a bunched clamor / Of strokes” (14-15). Her obstacles are “a great cargo”, and her father wishes her luck with them. She is trying to become independent and…

Metaphors merge two superficially incompatible concepts to create symbolism. Metaphors have entailments through which they highlight and make coherent certain aspects of our experience. (Lakoff and Johnson, 1980:132). Metaphor is pervasive in everyday life, not just in language but in thought and action.…
Whether we know it or not, we make use of metaphors and the many ways in which they help us make sense of the world. A metaphor is defined as a figure of speech that identifies an object or an idea that is similar to an unrelated thing. The use of metaphors and the language that it portrays helps to create new insight and evidence of the universe. Metaphors not only help classify the culture and diverseness of the natural world, and help interpret the scientific world, but help us set our outlooks on society; however, some may argue metaphors are an impractical use of our language that only complicate things that can instead be stated clearer.…
