Using Animals For Scientific Purposes

Throughout the history, animals are used for different purposes.Namely , we benefit from their fur, meat, milk and many more.Their usage isn’t limited to these only. They can also be used in scientific researches as subjects. At first it may seem horrifying on the other it is undeniable fact that science need them to do to experiements to combat with deadly diseas. As result the question ‘’Is using animals for scientific purposes ever acceptable?’’ becomes inevitable. It is unfortunate that it seems like the group who support usage of animals in researches doesn’t care about animals..It isn’t an issue of caring or not caring. It’s actually the issue of which living being is more important. Although some people believe that using animals in medical researches is unethical as it is taking advantage of another living being, I claim that it is acceptable since the most effective way to save people’s lives, reliable and both animals and human can benefit from it.

To start with; using animals for scientific purposes can be tolerated since it’s the most effective way to combat deadly diseas. Many experiments are tested on animals but it’s gains is so much that they can’t be ignored.Among the gains are many antibiotics, vaccines, erythropoietin for the treatment of renal failure and certain anemias, the development chemotherapies that have become standard treatment for combating or in some cases eradicating cancer and many of the procedures that have paved the way for organ transplants in human beings.1.So, it is true to say that many of the medicines used for coping with diseases such as cancer have to be tested before the patient takes them.Without animal research we wouldn’t know the side effects of medicines and when we figure out it can be too late. And there are many potential drugs that never reach human because they are found to be toxic in animal tests.

Moreover, benefiting from animals in medical researches is acceptable owing to reliable results. Animals are thought to be the closest match and best one with regards to applying this data to humans. For example, chimpanzees share 99% of their DNA with humans, and mice are 98% genetically similar to humans. All mammals, have the same set of organs (heart, kidneys, lungs, etc.) that function in essentially the same way with the help of a bloodstream and central nervous system. Because animals and humans are so biologically similar, they are susceptible to many of the same conditions and illnesses, including heart disease, cancer, and diabetes.2Due to all these similarities it is true to say that animals are the ones from which we can obtain most reliable results.

Furhermore, usage of animals in medical researches is admissible due to the fact that not only human but also animals can benefit from it.It may be true that human beings are the ones that benefit from these experiments mostly. However; these benefits aren’t only limited to human. There are also many deadly diseases among animals such as rabies, distemper, feline leukemia, infectious hepatitis3 virus, tetanus, anthrax to name a few.Fortunately, all these have vaccines to cure them but if these vaccines weren’t tested on some certain animals, the cure for the diseases would never be found thus many animals would die.Furthermore, animal testing is useful for saving endangered species from extinction. For example, Koalas, ravaged by an epidemic of sexually transmitted chlamydia and now classified as endangered in some regions of Australia, are being tested with new chlamydia vaccines that will possibly stall the animal's disappearance.

Opponents of usage of animals in medical researches are in the opinion that, this act can never be acceptable as it is violation of living being rights however; I argue that as long as it saves human’s lives there is nothing wrong with it.Of course, I am also against the idea of torturing or making them suffer and fortunately there are organization named IACUC4 that is made up of research experts, licensed veterinarians to minimize suffering. So, thanks to this organization every process of the research is observed and extreme pain or torturing is prevented. And what is more, the ones who are against animal research constantly consume meat or any other products that are got from animals so, it is completely true to say that if it is acceptable to kill animals to eat it is morally acceptable to utilize from animals in scientific researches to prevent greater sufferings without killing them.

When all arguments are taken into consideration, usage of animals in medical researches shouldn’t be perceived as an overall despicable act as long as it is applied for vital reasons such as saving other’s lives. While criticizing animal research it shouldn’t be ignored that it is the most effective and direct way to get results related to medicines or vaccines. Can you imagine how many people would die due to lack of drugs available?Millons! As for ethical concerns, animal researches shouldn’t perceived as an unethical act as main aim is to save thousands of people’s lives not to torture animals in vain.

However, to ensure that the health of humans are met, animals suffer as a consequence. For the well-being of humans in the present time or the future, animals are brought in harms way. It is not justifiable to allow more extreme research procedures to be permitted on animals when they would be considered unethical if done to humans. There should not be a separate code of ethics applied to human and animal research.…

    Animal Testing Ethics

Animals are usually confined to small cages and being exposed to harmful fumes for human benefit. In their “Animal” Journal, Elisabeth H. Ormandy and Catherine Schuppli claim that "the use of animals in research fosters a diverse range of attitudes, with some people expressing the desire for complete abolition of animal research practices, while others express strong support (392)." Animal testing has stirred up an argument between two opposing sides regarding the ethics of the practice. The two opposing sides are those who disagree with animal testing and those who agree with animal testing. Nuno Henrique Franco author of "Animal Experiments in Biomedical Research: A Historical Perspective" state that "Animal experimentation has played a central role in biomedical research throughout history. For centuries, however, it has also been an issue of heated public and philosophical discussion."(238) Those who are in favor of animal testing believe that it is beneficial to improving medicine. Those who are against animal testing believe that it is harmful to animals and that their are other ways to benefit humans. Being an animal lover, I oppose of animal testing for several different reasons. The first reason being animals are being subjected to all forms of suffering and isolation. The second reason is animals are not…
