Standards and sample preparation
_ Class 1 standard reference solution: Transfer 1 ml of the USP reference standard for residual solvent class 1 to a 100 ml volumetric flask. Add 9 ml of DMSO. Dilute to volume with water and agitate. Transfer 1 ml of this solution to a 100 ml volumetric flask, dilute to volume and agitate. Transfer 10.0ml of this solution to a 50ml volumetric flask dilute to volume and agitate.
_ Class 1 residual solvents standard: Transfer 1 .0ml of the reference solution to a headspace vial of 10ml. Add 5.0ml of water, close and agitate
_ Class 2 standard reference solution: Transfer 1 ml of the USP reference standard mixture A for residual solvent class 2 to a 50 ml volumetric flask.Dilute to volume with water and agitate. This is the reference standard A. Transfer 1 ml of the USP reference standard mixture B for residual solvent class 2 to a 50 ml volumetric flask.Dilute to volume with water and agitate. This is the reference standard B.

It is important to only use the minimum amount of solvent necessary to dissolve the unknown. Too much will result in significantly decreased percent recovery at the end of the experiment. 8. Set up gravity filtration system using a short stem funnel (glass) lined with folded filter paper, covered with a watch glass and placed on top of the 125 mL Erlenmeyer flask –the flask should have a few milliliters of water so it will remain warm while using the hotplate. It is vital that the solution remain hot during filtration.…

First, we used a clean syringe labeled H2O2 and filled it with H202. Then, we transferred the contents of the syringe into a 60 mL cup labeled Baseline. Second, we used the plastic transfer pipet to add 1 mL of distilled water and added it to the Baseline cup. Third, we used the syringe labeled H2O2 to add 10 mL of H2O2 and transfer that into the Baseline cup. Fourth, we gently swirled the contents of the Baseline cup to mix the solution. Then, we used the syringe labeled Transfer and removed 5 mL of the solution in the Baseline cup into the cup labeled Titration. Lastly, we titrated the 5 mL sample of the Baseline solution.…

There are two different preparations (starch-iodine or indophenol) that may be used for the vitamin C indicator solution. Neither is more accurate than the other. The starch-iodine mixture is much cheaper. It can be made ahead and stored in a dark, cool place in two liter soda bottles and dispensed in liter containers at the lab stations. Both indicators vary from one preparation to the next; so an accurate measure of vitamin C is not really possible with this protocol. The results allow students to compare relative amounts of vitamin C present.…
