Uss Peleliu Target Practice Analysis
Target Practice, USS Peleliu: a Photo by An-My Lê

Target Practice, USS Peleliu is a photo taken by Vietnam born An-My Lê in 2005 from the series “Events Ashore”. An-My Lê’s formative years were spent in Saigon, Vietnam during the Vietnam War and help shape her most prominent work: an examination of the United States military and America’s odd fascination with the Vietnam War. Target Practice, USS Peleliu is one of the final photographs that explored the various ships and other military installations around the world. Taken on the deck of USS Peleliu, An-My Lê captures a group of soldiers preparing for target practice. Instead of capturing the action of the gunfire, she captures the mundane act of preparing their targets. Viewers may find

In The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien, many soldiers carried physical objects with them no matter the weight or size. Lieutenant Jimmy Cross, who had much love for a young girl named Martha, carried light weight objects with a very special meaning for each one of them. Some of the things he carried that reminded him of Martha were photographs of her. One of the photographs he carried was an action shot of her playing volleyball with her knees visible. Looking at the photograph, “Lieutenant Jimmy Cross remembered touching that left knee” (4). Cross was able to recall the night he went on a date with her and gently touched her left knee and what he regretted not doing also. That only made matters worse. Then after they took office they managed to pass Jim Crow laws and Black Codes. The South definitely won the Civil War.…
