As you can see, there can be downsides to a utopia, but there are also good things about them.
For example, in the article “Want To Escape The Modern World? 9 ‘Utopias That Really Exist,” they talk about good things that happen in utopian communities and how they benefit the people. One part of the article, it says that a community in Green Bank, West Virginia is an unhealthy and radiated city. So, 150 of the people have moved to a different city to specifically get away from the radiation, which they believe is harming their bodies. A resident from the community that moved said, “ Life isn’t perfect here. No grocery stores, no restaurants, no hospital nearby. But at least, I’m healthy here. I can do things. I’m not in bed with a headache all the time.” Although their lives get better, it’s not completely
perfect. So back to some reasons why a utopia is not perfect in any way. In the same article as before, “ 4 Utopian Communities That Didn’t Pan Out”, the first source talks about how the residents were starting to leave the community school because of how insane and unrealistic it was. One part of the article says, “the community was hit by an outbreak of smallpox (very contagious disease), followed by many fires and soon collapsed in 1847.” That is one of the many failed utopias. Another example is in source 2. Source 2 is about a farm called the Fruitlands, founded by Charles Lane in June 1843. This farm was structured around the British reformist model, where the commune’s members were against the ownership of property, they were political anarchists, and believed in free love, and were vegetarians. Some of the people were forbidden to eat meat or use any animal products such as honey, wool, beeswax, or manure. They also weren’t allowed to use animals for labor. This forced the people to only use planted produce that grew up out of the soil so it would not disturb the worms and other living organisms in the soil. Most of the people in this community soon felt they had enough and left the are. The Fruitlands later collapsed in 1844. In conclusion, it’s pretty obvious that a utopian community can be very hard to achieve and keep forever. Utopias are highly unrealistic and unmanageable in many ways. So with that said, a utopia is 100% not possible and will fail every attempt taken. There are always the positive things about utopian communities, but also the negative and downsides of communities.
