Utoya Lost
Utoya Lost

It was a quiet summer's day on the Island of Utoya, where each year, hundreds of youngsters would come together and spend a week away from their families, to do projects, activities and other fun things. Little did they know, that many would never see their families again...

"Just another peaceful afternoon" Is what they told themselves as they all gathered around for the daily assembly. Friends side by side, smiles and giggles on every face, not only was the atmopsphere lively, so was the scenery.

Beautiful forests surrounded the camp, the trees were tall and slender, quiet a task to climb. As for the lakeside, a clear smooth water, but vast and deep.

The scenery may have been magnificent, but not for long, soon the water would turn red, and the trees... too high to climb.

(this website said 'the essay is too short' although it may be short, to make it longer would take the style, the flow out of it. Why put a world limit on sources of inspiration? If I where to put on a long essay, would you tell me to shorten it? Just leave it be, it's a short little essay and I think it's good. )

(it's still too short)

(even with that extra little description at the end?)

(I'm gonna continue)

(this is using up a lot of space, yet it's still too short?)

(What exactly is too short for you? )

Much of the area beyond the shore was surrounded by thick shrubbery and tall trees. From the park entrance, the creek could not even be seen from where we initially began our hike. Essentially, the creek was a hidden gem because the forestry hides it so well. Furthermore, it was not until we walked down a path for several yards that we could even see…

The sun shone vibrantly through the trees and I loved the way it complemented the gold leaves. I started to notice the incline to the top of the hill, it was steady unlike the Adirondacks where you go up and down. When I got to the top I saw a spectacular view of the surrounding neighborhoods and way in the distance I saw the buildings of Rochester. As I stood there I admired the pure beauty that lies so close to home. It is hard to believe that a wilderness like this one could be surrounded by suburban neighborhoods. Being higher up and in an open space I could really appreciate the mixture of golds, oranges and yellows it was different than being on regular ground level. I thought to myself ‘’I should do this more often, it’s peaceful and healthy.’’ I felt a certain peace with in me while I’m in the woods, suddenly my phone vibration broke my train of thought. It was my stepmom texting me to see if everything was okay, I replied yes and I’d be back at the trailhead in a short time. The leaves snapped and cracked under my feet on the way back and the crisp fall air made the not yet fallen leaves dance in the trees, it was getting later in the day. I was three quarters through the loop so I was still fine,I wasn’t…

Once they stepped off the boat, the family was awestruck by the luscious greenery and tropical colors that flooded their vision. Exquisite birds flew above the canopy of trees and the rustle of animals could be heard just past the patchwork of branches. Brilliant flowers sprung from overhanging tree limbs and the sounds of the jungle blended with the softly crashing waves.…

When I was a child I remembered our family’s annual vacations to Aruba each year at Christmas vacation from school. On the last day of school before vacation I would ask the classmates what their plans were for the much anticipated week off from school. Some would say going to a family member’s house. I would think how boring their family must have been. When I was asked to share my plans I would say, “Oh just a trip to some warm place” with boredom. I would share stories of banana boat rides, tubing adventures, and tails of snorkeling in the Atlantic Ocean. I remember one classmate once asking me if my family was wealthy because this was certainly not the norm for most of my other classmates. Being nine years old I had no idea of that.…

It was a warm sunny day, like the ones you would expect in a summer camp; laughter was the melody that filled the air. Everybody was cheerful and enthusiastic, well everybody except one of our counselors. He was very worried, because his sister had been extremely sick, and nobody had been able to heal her. Everybody in my group had told him how sorry we felt for her, but really nobody connected with his situation, so we were not thinking about it. Instead we were immerging our souls into the contentment that was surrounding us. That day while we were acting, everybody was relaxed, focused and happy on what we were doing. We were living in our own little summer bubble. We decided to take a small break, in between the laughs I remember a friend saying “Isn’t it surprisingly amazing how beautiful life can be?”. That was the last sentence said before a cell phone rang and changed the course of the day.…

The trees loved to hear our tales of far off lands and the journeys that took us so far from home. For they could not take the journey, never would they look upon the mountains save from afar. The beauty of the sea depths, the golden sands of the desert. No, the trees stand where they are born and never may they move for the gods who made them cared not for the desires of the the forest. "Stay in your place, and care to the ground" they told the trees. "You will shelter the beasts, and provide that which men need of you, that is your purpose and your lot." And the trees were happy enough, for they knew nothing of the world's wonders beyond their boughs.…
