The UWB IAS program fits very well with my learning goals. I have had educational experiences from both Korea and the United States. For the most part, my educational experience in Korea felt like the banking system. …show more content…
Students have been taught through this method of education, where teachers simply give all information and anticipated their students to remember everything what they said. Although, I have found that this kind of education would be good sometimes because I felt it was easy to accept what teachers taught by just listening, I realized that it will not help me to learn well by being a depository which was only meant to accept rather than think critical questions. This kind of learning felt very oppressive to me because teachers using this banking education method was dominating the students. However, when I heard that the IAS program would focus more on the problem-posing model of education, I was happy to be in the opportunity for learning the best way I can.
I learn best when I come up with the question and answer myself through critical thinking and discussion, rather than having the information handed to me to memorize and understand by myself.
More effective teaching such as this will result in better students and ultimately a better society because it will embolden students to express their thoughts, and become more engaged in the learning process. In return, society will influence educational systems in a positive way by creating more effective learning environments for teachers and students. Freire’s problem-posing method is the future of education. Based on what I have researched, the IAS program seems to embrace this method, as I see a lot of freedom in the educational process of this program. I anticipate teachers treating students as equals; when teachers and students will have lots of communication between them, it will allow for equal say in the knowledge. I look forward to the interaction with teachers, who may be just as interested in hearing my thoughts as I am in hearing theirs.
There is nothing better than enjoying the learning experience when it is not being forced upon one’s self. Reality is what you make it, and we have the power to manipulate it in order to create our own
fate.
The IAS program will help me attain my goals. I am a strong candidate for IAS program because I am ambitious and creative person, which are traits that will help me succeed in not only my academic career, but also help me along my professional path. Though this goal may tough, I know that through hard work and dedication, I will be able to actualize my vision into the reality.
