He was born on May 11, 1932 in Lombardi, Italy and since he was very young he was interested in fashion so when he turned 17 he decided to study in Paris at the Ècole des Beaux-Arts and at the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne. After his studies he was an apprentice at Jean Dessès where he practiced his sketches and then worked at Guy Laroche’s fashion house. His company was sold in 1998 to Holding di Partecipazioni Industriali and then to Marzotto, a big luxury group, however he stayed as the labels’ designer both times.
In 2008 he announced his retirement and then presented his last prêt-à-porter SS collection in Paris’ FW. Later in 2009 his own documentary Valentino: The Last Emperor was premiered and in 2011 the Valentino Garavani Virtual Museum was launched, both showing the designer’s life and works. One year after, in 2012 The Valentino: Master of Couture exhibition, which displays his creations, opened its doors in Somerset House.
Amongst his multiple awards, in 2012, he was given the Commandeur de l'ordre des Arts et des Lettres medal as a recognition for his significance in the fashion industry.
