Introduction
In order to conduct an in-depth study of Mars’ strata, an international coalition should establish a base in the Valles Marineris. Designing a base for on Mars will require careful thought and decisions.
Location
One of the best places to establish a base on Mars is in the Valles Marineris, at approximately 13.9˚S, 59.2˚W. The Valles Marineris offers many positive environmental conditions for a base. Located just south of Mars’ equator, the Valles Marineris is a system of canyons nearly 4000 kilometers long, between fifty and one hundred kilometers wide, and up to ten kilometers deep (Valles Marineris, n.d.). The Valles Marineris offers monumental scientific opportunity to study Mars’ strata. Because of the Valles Marineris proximity to the equator, it will provide more consistent periods of day versus night time and a more consistent climate than that of the areas of …show more content…
Compact vertical hydroponics systems are much more efficient than traditional farming techniques and allow crops to grow in harsher climates like those found on Mars much more easily than typical farming could be. If properly organized, a farming system of this order can produce roughly the same amount of food in three hundred and twenty square feet as traditional farming can produce in two acres (“The 2018,” n.d.).
Central Hub The center section of the base will contain multiple key systems. Crew members can find the base’s communication systems as well as displays for the environment monitoring systems which will insure that the various components in the base’s air (oxygen, carbon dioxide, etc.) remains at safe levels, in the central hub. Crew members can also find the base’s main medical bay in the central hub in this, however smaller emergency kits will be kept throughout the base as well.
