Value Alignment
An organization’s values are the basis for defining that organization’s culture. “Companies with strong cultures are clear on what their beliefs and values need to be and take the process of shaping those beliefs and values very seriously. Most important, the values espoused by these companies underlay the strategies they employ” (Pearce & Robinson, 2009, p. 396). Team C believes that values are a person’s beliefs, which are used to guide decisions and behaviors. Conversely, organizational values define the standards of the organization and guide the behaviors of the organization’s employees.
Everyone in Team C has their own personal set of values, even if they aren’t cognizant of them.
The team’s values are what we think is most important to us. Values give the team a sense of direction and purpose. Our values originate from a variety of influences. Parents are our biggest source of values as children. We are also influenced by neighbors, religious affiliation, teachers, and friends. Our values evolve with age and experience. As we get older, our core values start to gain more importance.
Recreational Equipment, Inc.’s (REI) was established in 1938 by 23 mountaineers in the Pacific Northwest. It started as an outdoor gear co-op whose organizational values are reflected in their mission statement: “to inspire, educate and outfit for a lifetime of outdoor adventure and stewardship” (Recreational Equipment, Inc., 2009, para. 2). REI’s values are based on nature conservation, inspiring responsible use of the outdoors, using responsible business practices to enhance nature and community, increase human-powered recreation outdoors, and having employees who are engaged in the company’s vision.
