Variation in Properties in the Third Row of the Periodic Table
Experiment 5: VARIATIONS IN PROPERTIES
IN THE THIRD ROW OF THE PERIODIC TABLE

INTRODUCTION The periodic table is a tabular display of the chemical elements, organized on the basis of their atomic numbers and chemical properties. Elements are presented in increasing atomic number. Elements with the same number of valence electrons are kept together in groups, such as the halogens and the noble gases. Due to this, there are gaps that form four distinct rectangular areas or blocks. The f-block is not included in the main table, but rather is usually floated below, as an inline f-block would make the table impractically wide. Using periodic trends, the periodic table can help predict the properties of various elements and the relations between properties. As a result, it provides a useful framework for analyzing chemical behavior, and is widely used in chemistry and other sciences.

METHODOLOGY To study the variations of the properties of the elements in the third row of the periodic table, it is a must to see its physical as well as acid-base properties. The first to test were the physical properties of each element: its physical state, color and luster. Luster is the state or quality of shining by reflecting light on the element causing it to sparkle. For the acid-base properties, sample of 1 mL for aqueous solution of the potassium hydroxide, hydrochloric acid and the oxides of each sample element was placed in a spot plate and added 2 drops of litmus indicator to each one. Observe the color change.

DATA SHEET (Please see attached)

TREATMENT OF RESULTS Elements that show metallic properties in the third row of the periodic table of elements are sodium (Na) and aluminum (Al). Those of magnesium (Mg), silicon (Si), phosphorus (P), sulfur (S), chlorine (Cl), and argon (Ar) exhibit nonmetallic properties. The color of the litmus indicator changes as it combines with acidic and basic solutions. To indicate as to what property the element has, the

Dmitri Mendeleev’s Periodic table is based on atomic weight, whereas, the modern periodic table keeps the atomic number as the base. An atomic table arranges elements from left to right in a row with the atomic number and properties gradually changing. The elements on the next row will actually exhibit similar properties as the ones above or below it. This provides an example of the periodicity nature of the elements. The columns of different elements in a period have the same or very similar properties. The properties of the elements change gradually as the columns move down through the periodic table. Atoms in similar families, such as H2S and H2O, exhibit both similar properties and molecular structure. This shows periodicity in both the molecules and the individual atoms.…

Here are some questions about the elements, their properties, and periodicity. In each case, the correct answer is the name of an element (one of the two given). Write the answer in the appropriate space at the right, placing the first letter in the first blank. There are more than enough blanks to fit either element name, so the number of letters in the name cannot be used as a clue. When the puzzle is complete, the Periodic Law will be displayed in the highlighted column.( by Bronwyn J. Nelson, Fairfield High School, Fairfield, Ohio.)…

Another expected trend across the period is that the pH of the oxide solution will change from basic on the left of the group (especially alkali metals) to acidic on the right, once dissolved in water. This characteristic is then likely to affect the last of the properties being looked at, which is the reaction the oxide caused when exposed to hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide. The basic solutions should be neutralized by the addition of hydrochloric acid, and the acidic solution should be neutralized by the sodium hydroxide. Any metal oxide solution that have a relative amphoteric…
