VARK Analysis While many individuals pursue an advanced education, the method in which students absorb and retain the required learned material varies from individual to individual. To give oneself the best possible opportunity for success, one must effectively decipher the method of studying which will best assist them in succeeding in their academic career. The VARK website assists individuals in identifying the correct information collection method in order for one’s success.     The VARK analysis quiz is to evaluate learning styles. VARK stands for Visual, Aural, Read/Write, and Kinesthetic. When taking the quiz, the scores indicated that there was a multi-modal preference for learning. Multi-modal indicates “multiple preferences which gives the learner anywhere from 2-4 modes for learning and communication with others” (VARK: A Guide to Learning Styles Questionnaire, 2013). It gives the learner an arsenal of tools to use to communicate, teach, and learn vs. one preferred method. A majority of learners are distinguished to be multi-modal (VARK: A Guide to Learning Styles Multimodality, 2013). Within the multi-modal world, there are different theories or “approaches” to describe the multi-modal learner. One is the context specific approach. The learner “looks at the info that is to be learned and chooses the mode that is best for the situation (VARK: A Guide to Learning Styles Multimodality, 2013). Another way to look at multi-modal learning is the whole sense approach. This mode “uses the various modes in combination to make decisions, learn, and present materials to others. The learner feels unsure about using only one way to learn a new subject, and will use other modes to review learning”(VARK: A Guide to Learning Styles Multimodality, 2013).” This method of using multiple ways to “reinforce learning is the only way a multimodal learner feels they truly understand new material” (VARK: A Guide to Learning Styles Multimodality, 2013). Sequencing is another approach to understand multi-modal learning. Learners “switch modes depending on how in-depth of learning they wish to achieve, whether it be comprehensive, simplistic, or moderate.     The VARK Learning style assessment was developed by Neil Fleming in 1987 as a way to improve the development of teachers and to help students become better learners. The VARK inventory categorizes four different sensory modalities with an extra category for multimodal students (Marcy, 2001). The acronym VARK stands for visual, aural, read/write, and kinesthetic learning modalities. Visual learners are students who learn by seeing information displayed using graphs, pictures, or diagrams. Aural learners prefer to hear the information, and process it best by listening to lectures or having information read aloud. Learners that fall into the read/write category thrive on seeing written words, and do best when they take meticulous notes and read them over and over. And lastly, kinesthetic learners do best when the student is partaking in physical activity. These learners need to move around and work manually with ideas and thrive with hands on activities. The additional multimodal category consists of students who fall into more than one sensory modality of any combination (Nelson, 2013).     During the VARK questionnaire that I took I scored an 11 on visual, aural, and read/write. The topic that I scored highest on was Kinesthetic and I scored a 12 on it. Kinesthetic is a learning tool that is hands-on approach. People that are kinesthetic are easily distracted by the activity that is going on. The difficult approach towards it would be sitting still for an amount of time, such as a lecture.     There are several methods used to determine learning styles. “A learning style is, rather, a description of a process, or of preferences. Any inventory that encourages a learner to think about the way that he or she learns is a useful step towards understanding, and hence improving, learning” (Fleming, N., & Baume, D., 2006, p.4). . One of the most commonly used learning styles is the Fleming VARK model. VARK stands for visual, auditory, reading and writing and kinesthetic learners.
