VATICAN CITY RESEARCH
International Destination Trends
VATICAN CITY
Introduction
Europe is one of the continent that has a well-developed tourism industry. It has for some time dominated the international travel scene in terms of numbers of arrivals and receipts. Western Europe is accessible, with major transportation routes both within the region and outside the region. Countries of Western Europe combined with the nations of Southern and Northern Europe form the most important tourist region in the world. In 2005, Europe accounted for just over a half of all international tourist arrivals. One of the many things that bring tourists to Europe is that there is a wealth of both artificial and natural attractions. In this research I shall look at a man-made resource-based leisure pursuit in Europe-town and discuss it. But first I will discuss the tourism statistic of Europe.
Europe Tourism Statistics
International tourism receipts increased by 2% in real terms, totalling US$ 458 billion which represents 43% of the world total. Tourism plays an important role in Europe because of its economic and employment potential, as well as its social and environmental implications. The role played by tourism, for both businesses and citizens, has grown considerably in recent decades. According to estimates from the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Enterprise and Industry, tourism accounts for more than 5 % of the European’s gross domestic product (GDP). The tourist accommodation sector employs 2.4 million people in the European Union and total employment within the whole of the European tourism industry is estimated to be between 12 million and 14 million people (Eurostat, 2013). Table 1 below shows data of international tourism number of arrivals in 4 of the European countries from 2008 to 2011 as indicated by The World bank (2012).

The table above indicates that Italy has been increasing the number of tourists it receives each year between 2008 and 2011. It is second, only to France

After 1420, when Pope Martin V (papacy 1417-31) brought the papacy back the Rome for good, it became something of a papal duty to restore the city to its former greatness. Because as many as 100,000 visitors might swarm into Rome during religious holidays, it was important that they be “moved by its extraordinary sights,” as one pope put it, and thus find their “belief continually confirmed and daily corroborated by great buildings … seemingly made by the hand of God.” In other words, the popes were charged with the sacred duty of becoming great patrons of the arts and architecture of Rome.…

The history of Rome spans 2,800 years of the existence of a city that grew from a small Italian village in the 9th century BC into the center of a vast civilization that dominated the Mediterranean region for centuries, but was eventually overrun by Germanic tribes, marking the beginning of the Middle Ages, and that eventually became the seat of the Roman Catholic Church and the home of a sovereign state within its walls, Vatican City. It has continued to play a major role in global politics, just as it has enormously influenced the history and culture of European peoples for millennia. I like to research about the city's formation, Roman republic and Roman Empire.…

It is beyond doubt that Venice is an exotic location which allures countless trippers. Some share identical special interests. For instance, tourists who are culture enthusiasts in Venice would visit St. Mark’s square and St. Mark’s Cathedral. This certain part of tourism is coined special interest tourism (SIT) (Norman, Ngaire & Ros 2001). It is different from mass tourism, because the individuals take their special interests…

What we know about urban tourism? Urban tourism is considered as a wide sector and variety of tourism that blends in a big city like they have the element of heritage, shopping, sports and more. In urban tourism we can see there are a few types of growth cities, for example pre modern cities like Athens, Greece are for tourist who seeks for an escape from holidays and relax. Medieval cities like York or Vatican are for pilgrimage while renaissance cities like Rome or Florence is for tourist who looks for a grand tour. “‘Urban tourism’ is as equally valid as other conceptual definitions previously accepted within the study of tourism, for instance 'mountain ' or 'wilderness ' tourism. However, apart from this it may also be said that 'urban ' can be interpreted as a type, or related types of activity, typifying the holiday rather than its spatial setting only. In fact the focus of urban tourism is the study of the interrelationships between tourism, in its many shapes and guises, and the urban environment.”(David Gilbert and Mark Clark). In the growth of cities there are 5 types of tourist city types. Those are the resort city which have entertainment at a premium, have popular culture and more on leisure pursuits. The 2nd is historic city, this intend to be more historic and more on pre- industrial heritage. The 3rd is what they considered as city of high culture which the city have rare artefacts. Or that city is place of learning and they have the culture as high art and more on to high class culture. The fourth type is the world city, these types of tourist city have strong political and administrative functions, they have a…
