The V-Chip had quite an impact on television since it has been introduced. The whole point of the V-Chip was to regulate what children watch on television by making a rating system so the parent has all the power to choose what their kids will watch on television. If for some reason there is a television show that is being questioned by a parent, that parent can contact the local station the show plays on to file a complaint in hopes they re-rate the rating that show has received. The V-chip can be very effective at protecting kids from certain type of television shows but it is hard to personalize a show to completely fall in to a parent’s acceptable manner. The V-chip does not replace the parent and it’s that…
In “TV’s Negative Influence on Kids Reaffirmed” by Jeffery M. McCall, he claims that too much television is unhealthy for children. McCall states that children are more likely to be sexually active, violent, and socially impaired. The author claims that television not only negatively affects children, it also prevents children form doing productive activities such as doing homework, participating in sports, and reading. Even though all TV manufactures include v-chips in all televisions, McCall says that most families do not understand the system ratings that come with the v-chip. The author goes on to say that networks rate their own television programs and are not accurately labeling or rating their shows. McCall also argues that parents should…
“I had one last chance to make a decision. One final opportunity to decide who I was going to be. I could step into that alley, stand up for Hassan, the way he’d stood up for me all those times in the past, and accept whatever would happen to me. Or I could run. In the end I ran.” (Pg. 77)…
Clarissa Harlowe "Clara" Barton was a pioneer nurse who founded the American Red Cross. In addition to being a hospital nurse, she worked as a teacher, patent clerk, and humanitarian. At a time when relatively few women worked outside the home, Barton built a career helping others. She was never married, as she knew the restrictions of a married woman at the time, but had a relationship with John J. Elwell. During the end of the American Civil War, Barton worked at a hospital she made helping the people at the Andersonville prison camp where 13,000 people died.…
Children do not have the experience or the intellectual concept they need to make important decisions. Therefore; businesses targeting children are not morally right to Linn. Many items not available to children such as, watching inappropriate movies, television shows, or rated mature video games. One item that was created to block inappropriate movies, television shows and rated mature video games is the v-chip. A v-chip is a device to allow parents to block television shows and movies from children. Even though the v-chip is invented it is not very affected. Not all of the parents use the v-chip or may not know of the chip. This problem already makes up a large percentage of the inappropriate movies and television shows being accessible to children. Another reason the v-chip is not very affected is some people that sell television do not know how to program these v-chips. This is a problem towards children because the media has somewhat of a control over the children through television. The media has for example foul language, nudity, and gun violence, which children watch and learn and become exposed to these. Hebdige wrote “Refracted through centuries of usage, the word has acquired a number of quite different, often contradictory, meanings” (377). These examples…
“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore, send the homeless tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door.” Reference? America has long been the land of freedom and hope to the world, and the American military is what has kept her that way. People have forgotten how important and valuable the military is to the world that we live in. As part of the Budget Control Act of 2011, automatic sequestration calls for $1.2 trillion in lowered federal spending, with 50% coming from defense and 50% coming from non-defense budgets. If Congress cannot reach an agreement, these cuts will reduce the Department of Defense spending by about $55 billion dollars. On September 11, 2001, the United States faced a difficult time in which 3,000 lives were lost due to an attack upon the U.S. by terrorists who hijacked airplanes and crashed them into the Twin Towers in New York City, the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, and the United States Pennsylvania! That day, 9/11, has become a day in which we remember the lives that were lost and the families who were affected by such a tragedy. We called on our military once again, and they were there to protect our country. I am against automatic sequestration towards the military and military programs for many reasons.…

Online, physically, or verbally you can be a victim of being bullied. You don’t have to keep things as they are. The question is how to handle the situation (Do you attack the bully and become the bully yourself? Or do you ignore the bully and pretend all is well?) What you do is speak up and ask for help. I would know, because not only was I a victim, I was also a person who stood by and simply watched it happen.…
In the year 2000, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) adopted a rule that televisions sets and computers that include a television tuner and have picture screens measuring 13 inches or larger needed to be equipped with features to block the display of television programming based upon ratings (The V-Chip: Options to Restrict What Your Children Watch on TV, 2016). This is known as the v-chip. This chip gives parents that ability to block out programs that they feel are not suitable for their children, based on the rating that appears in the first 15 seconds when the show begins. Why would the FCC implement a television rating system and a v-chip to monitor violence, if this was not believed to be a negative influence to youth behavior? This shows confirmation…

In NASA, the Mars science lab rover is acknowledged, over a budget at 2.5 billion dollars. Although Obama’s Fiscal plan for 2013 would incise NASA’s funds from 587 million dollars to 360 million dollars, no quantity of money is worth Mars exploration. Mars is still merely a rocky surface in the midst of no indication of water or active geology. Space exploration is exceptionally expensive to the citizens of the United States; the government could unquestionably use this money to better the country where the people live. Exploration costs millions of dollars which is completely unnecessary to provide the NASA space program.…

Persuasive Essay : Many people would be happy and satisfied if they were in a relationship with money and fame. Doesn't that seem like the perfect life? Everyone begins to think that in life that's all that matters, and that's all they need, nothing could be better. Society dictates our morals, feelings, the way we do things and try's to tell us certain things we do are wrong and we need to do them the way they feel necessary. Our generations to come will have no clue what the meaning of a true, harmonious, happy life. They begin to think that not telling the truth is ok , and eventually get so use to it that even if they could hear the truth they wouldn't want to. It becomes part of their daily life. Clearly our society, or government has their own sneaky, conniving ways to try and brain wash everyone. Due to the problem that most people would rather have love, money, and fame, it's very rare to find some one who doesn't have any of that but is satisfied with only knowing the truth. People look up to celebrities, but they do not set good examples or try to be role models. In proposing a solution to the problem of adhering to the actions of celebrities, the analysis relates to Henry David Thoreau's belief in individuality as he talked about in his book Walden. Who is your hero? Usually the answer to this question, at least for many of us, involves a famous actor or singer, a celebrity. The celebrities of the world are the wealthiest, most beautiful and most stylish individuals to walk upon the planet. These icons, however, seem to have no moral dilemma whatsoever with corrupting the public. They are role models to the public, just as parents are role models to their children. Children mirror the actions of their parents, as does society the actions of celebrities. Suddenly, few people in the world are content because they do not live the same lifestyle as Madonna or Michael Jordan. Henry David Thoreau offers solutions in his work, Walden, to the constant societal…
