Published in the Forum of Nutrition, Leitzmann 2005 looked at the positive effects of a vegetarian diet. He stated that a growing body of scientific evidence indicates that wholesome vegetarian diets offer distinct advantages compared to diets containing meat and other foods of animal origin. The benefits arise from lower intakes of saturated fat, cholesterol and animal protein as well as higher intakes of complex carbohydrates, dietary fiber, magnesium, folic acid, vitamin C and E, carotenoids and other phytochemicals. Since vegetarians consume widely divergent diets, a differentiation between various types of vegetarian diets is necessary. In the past, vegetarian diets have been described as being deficient in several nutrients including protein, iron, zinc, calcium, vitamin B12 and A, n-3 fatty acids and iodine. Numerous studies have demonstrated that the observed deficiencies are usually due to poor meal planning. Well-balanced vegetarian diets are appropriate for all stages of the life cycle, including children, adolescents, pregnant and lactating women, the elderly and competitive athletes. In most cases, vegetarian diets are beneficial in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, hypertension, diabetes, cancer, osteoporosis, renal disease and dementia, as well as diverticular disease, gallstones and rheumatoid…

One major controversy in our country as well as other countries is what the preferable lifestyle diet is. Many dietary experts claims that one of the best lifestyle diets is the vegetarian diet. A vegetarian diet is defined as a person who does not eat or does not believe in the eating of animals, or in some cases, anything deriving from an animal. Usually with a person who is on a vegetarian diet, he or she will eat only foods from plants like vegetables and fruits. There is a choice of lifestyle available to every person that can positively impact the mind, body, and spirit, and yet many do not choose it. Often, it is considered a sentimental venture because some individuals choose it for the simple reason that they do not enjoy the idea of consuming product that comes from a creature with the potential for emotional and mental capacity. For this reason, many dismiss the concept, purely to reject the social conformation to the idea. For any one person or family in need of a positive dietary or lifestyle change for any of a plethora of reasons, it is undoubtedly worth the time spent investigating. Vegetarianism is a lifestyle that offers physiological, psychological, and spiritual benefits, and it can also be altered to fit the personal preferences and needs of nearly any human being.…

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been out with family or friends and have had to respond to this statement: “You eat eggs and cheese? I thought you were a vegetarian!” Of course, that results in a long discussion about the differences between a standard vegetarian and a strict vegan diet. But, I can see the confusion for people that do not follow a meat-free diet. After all, there are many similarities between vegans and vegetarians. In fact, these similarities far outweigh the diet differences. Health benefits and motivations for vegan and vegetarian diets are very similar, with only minor differences in eating habits distinguishing the two.…

In a study completed in 2003, it was found that approximately 4% of Canadians follow a vegetarian diet (“American Dietetic Association,” 2003). This type of diet concentrates on the consumption of plants for food. The most common type is the lacto-ovo vegetarian diet, which restricts the intake of meat, poultry and fish, but allows the intake of eggs and dairy products (Vegetarian Diet, 2009). Many people become vegetarians because they feel it is wrong to kill or eat animals, but there are some that decide to follow a vegetarian diet because of its health benefits. One of these benefits includes attaining and maintaining a healthy body weight. Data has shown that people, who follow a vegetarian diet, are able to significantly improve their body weight. However, there are many risks associated with doing this. Despite the associated risks, it is believed that vegetarian diets are beneficial to weight loss as they improve overall biochemical, dietary and anthropometric measurements.…
