In this essay I will be comparing two films, ‘Vertigo’, and ‘Trust’. I picked these movies off the list not knowing what they were about, but the synopsis I read on them sounded interesting. I will discuss the use of cinematography and the genres of the films, and describe how effective they are. I will also look at the characters, action, plot and atmosphere created in these films.
The film “Vertigo” loves to keep you on the edge of your seat. The plot is based on a man name Scotty who was acrophobia (fear of heights). It’s a love story with a mystery tacked together. It starts off with a chase after a criminal on a rooftop and Scotty accidentally slips and falls, he catches himself and hangs on for his life, his partner attempting to save him falls to his own death. After this scene we don’t know if Scotty was having a dream or if Scotty was the fellow officer and couldn’t save his partner because his fear of heights or maybe Scotty really did fall and someone else had scooped him up. The only real thing we know for sure is that Scotty has acrophobia and because of this Scotty retires as a detective. A former college buddy named Galvin asks him for his help by spying on his wife Madeline because he claims she’s been acting rather strange lately and thinks she might possibly be possessed by a dead woman named Carlotta. At first Scotty wants nothing to do with this until he laid eyes on her and instantly fell in love. During this scene the way the camera captures his eyes, and the glowing amore around ‘Madeline’ helps you feel him fall in love with her. He follows her around place to place to figure out what is going on, at one point Madeline is sitting in a museum in front of a portrait and Scotty notices a resemblance, the same hair dew, the same bouquet of flowers she just brought that sat beside her, and the necklace in the photo which the camera gave you a close up of
