A Very Proper Gander
A Very Proper Gander This piece by James Thurber is satirizing groundless and preposterous nationalism or even jingoism. He is satirizing the, accuse and destroy, ask questions later attitude of the government or people within the Government. The Other animals mishearing something said about the gander get into and uproar and whip them selves into a frenzy about how the gander is against the "Flag" and the "bomb" and anything involving their way of life and government. So they set about to destroy or at least banish the Gander with out checking to see if what was said was accurate or legitimate.

To make these animals the negative end he paints them as irrational and paranoid. In the first few lines when someone says "He is a very proper Gander" and the other animal mishears and hears propaganda and then jumps to all these conclusions about the evils of the Gander, It's absurd. It is used over and over again. Like when the Mob of animals go to drive the gander out is completely absurd. It almost sound like the villagers with torches going to drive out the monster. To show the ignorance of the animals he also uses animals that are not known for their intelligence, the chicken, the duck, the hen, not exactly the exactly the thinkers of the animal kingdom. There is also a big sarcastic line in the end, "Anybody who you and your wife thinks is going to overthrow the government by violence must be driven out of the country." I think this is incredibly valid especially today in the wake of 9-11. There are lots of instances around the country of people going, "You're Muslim you are going to destroy our way of life, so you must die!" It is ridiculous. Like that guy who drove his car into the masque. No foundation other then, I heard…. I was involved in a church event that was trying to educate Catholics about Islam. A couple actually thought the point of the meeting was to demonize Islam and ban them from the neighborhood, which needless to say it wasn't it was o do the

Although by the end of the novel, he has lost a great deal of faith in the world and humanity, what is significant is that he hasn't lost all of it which is depicted by his gesture of animals.…

‘Of Mice and Men’ is well know for the usage of Animals within the books and without the animals, the book would no nearly be as descriptive as it is, but also it would not have the underlying meaning within the book which is so hard to put into books. Nothing within the book is just ‘ a filler’- everything in the book is there for a reason and links up with other points within the story, all leading up to the one main point at the end of the book. Which, one has to fully understand the book to finally see all of the signs and warnings that Steinbeck gives the reader using animals.…

Flannery O’Connor uses religious animals to reveal the contradiction nature of humans. When Asbury sees his sister, he tells his mother to, “let sleeping dogs lie” (O’Connor 358); the dogs could be related to Cerberus, the gate keeper to the underworld. Asbury sees his sister as evil. The quote also foreshadows Asbury’s illness, because he is lying in bed waiting for the illness to take his life, like the sleeping dogs. Flannery O’Connor also uses animals from different religions to foreshadow misfortunate events, such as “the dry cows were on one side and the milk herd on the other. She slowed the car and then stopped altogether, her attention caught by a cow with a bad quarter.” (O’Connor 362). The cow is a holy animal in the Hinduism religion, and the cow having a bad quarter is an omen of bad luck. It also foreshadows to the bad milk which is tainted with the stench of smoke, and causing Asbury to fall more ill. Another use of religious animals is “to find freedom, to liberate my imagination, to take it like a hawk from its cage and set it ‘whirling off into the widening gyre’ (Yeats) and what did I find?…

He tries to use logic when saying that the animals in charge that are doing none of the work, but all the thinking for the farm, need more food than those working hard and starving. The reasoning is not really a good reason for what Napoleon and him are wanting to do, but the animals on the farm don't know any better, they aren't educated. So, in the end, all the animals always believe what ever Napoleon has to say, or Squealer in that matter. They believe them because everything they are saying seem to make sense to them, when in reality, none of it would actually make sense to an educated person. He also uses pathos in also all…

The allegory is shown through many of the animals relating to historic characters and what they do in the story. For example, Mr. Jones represents Tsar Nicholas II. These characters in Animal Farm represent the mentioned characters because their actions are very similar to that of the historical characters that they represent. Snowball leads the revolution against the human oppressor and the animals start to follow him. At that point, Napoleon, expels Snowball and takes charge. After that, his animalism society slowly crumbles and he as well as his fellow pigs or practices similar to the humans; it is very ironic because the objective of animalism is to ban humans from Animal…

"To see a magnificent wild creature wearing a comic hat and carrying out quasi-human actions is demeaning to the animal, even if it can be proved that it is enjoying the process. It degrades because it makes it into something it is not. It reduces it to a caricature of humanity." - William Johnson, The Rose Tinted Menagerie.…

Old Major, a prize-winning boar, gathers the animals of the Manor Farm for a meeting in the big barn. He tells them of a dream he has had in which all animals live together with no human beings to oppress or control them. He tells the animals that they must work toward such a paradise and teaches them a song called “Beasts of England,” in which his dream vision is lyrically described. The animals greet Major’s vision with great enthusiasm. When he dies only three nights after the meeting, three younger pigs, Snowball, Napoleon, and Squealer formulate his main principles into a philosophy called Animalism. Late one night, the animals manage to defeat the farmer Mr. Jones in a battle, running him off the land. They rename the property Animal Farm and dedicate themselves to achieving Major’s dream. The cart-horse Boxer devotes himself to the cause with particular zeal, committing his great strength to the prosperity of the farm and adopting as a personal maxim the affirmation “I will work harder.”…

The writer doesn’t convey their opinion on capital punishment or the death penalty. As the story plays out, all the writer is doing is telling a story of a mouse and incorporating all these different animals. Every animal has a different role. And each role is specific to want happens in a hanging. “A raccoon, wearing the traditional black mask, was the executioner….A large praying mantis was in charge of the religious end of the ceremonies.” (Barnet, Cain, & Burto, 2010, p. 1309) Is the writer trying to tell the reader something? It isn’t clear, but the writer does convey the hardship of watching such a thing occur.…

In the tale the pig’s convince the others animals to act and think a certain way as a result of the propaganda that occurs through the entirety of the tale. Old Major brings together the animals and protests the human leadership the animals are under. The pigs take advantage of Old Major’s death and use his speech as the first building block in their series of propaganda. The Pigs then use the song “Beasts of England” their rally cry and later destroy this ritual because it is no longer necessary. Squealer successfully uses his body language to put on a performance that convinces the animals to act in favor of the pigs. The first major piece of propaganda to be implemented is the commandments written by the pigs, which are eventually all broken. The ideas of Old Major are simplified once again with a motto the pigs create which moves the animals away from the desired results of the revolution. Napoleon then drives Snowball off of the farm and turns him into a scapegoat. After this event takes place Napoleon is able to establish himself as a heroic leader. The motto the sheep’s chant is used to drown out any chance of protest. The donkey Benjamin notices afterwards one of the commandments on the wall has been changed. Life on the farm continues in the same terrible way with no sign of hope for the animals. The strong presence of deliberate tactics to assist a leader…
