VETERAN SERVICES
The term “Veteran Student” is typically used as a loose and general term describing a student that has self-disclosed they served in the military, or is a veteran that is exercising their VA Education Benefits to pay for school. Although this may be true when pertaining to veteran students, it barely scratches the surface in defining the different types of Veteran Students we service at GateWay.
As a guideline, below lists the different types of “Veteran Students” we encounter each day. Understanding this and knowing how to be aware of the type of Veteran Student we service, can greatly have a positive impact on the …show more content…
students’ outlook of the college and how staff value and service them as a student.
As you read the information below, think how this impacts your behavior and actions in terms of providing a higher level of Customer Service and Student Centric focus as you serve Veteran Students.
Military: This student is currently serving on Active Duty, Reserves, or Guard in any of the branches of service. Also known as Active Military Status. Often times you can identify a military-student when they are wearing the military uniform. Another way to identify a military-student is if the student shows their military ID card (Also known as a CAC Card or "Smart" ID card; CAC is pronounced as KACK, or KACK Card.
Veteran: This student is basically out of military service, not serving on Active Duty, Reserves, or Guard. There are two-types of veteran-students to be aware of, see below. In either situation, GateWay services veteran-students the same way, the only difference is how and where the monies to pay for school comes from.
• Student using VA Education Benefits
• Student no longer using VA Education Benefits
Spouse: The term “spouse” refers to a husband or wife to an Active Military Service Member or to a Veteran. Below lists the different types of spouse-students we service at
GateWay:
• Spouse to a service member serving on Active Duty, Reserves, or Guard using Military Tuition Assistance
• Spouse of veteran that is using transfer of VA Education Benefits
• Surviving spouse of an active military member, killed in action
• Surviving spouse of a veteran that died, not serving on Active Duty, Reserves, or Guard
Note: depending on the above definitions
Dependent: A “dependent” is a military term used through the military and the VA system. A dependent can be a spouse, but for VA purposes a “dependent’ refers to “children” of an Active Military Service Member or to a Veteran. Below lists the different types of dependent-students we service at GateWay:
• Dependent of veteran that is using transfer of VA Education Benefits
• Dependent of an active military member, killed in action
• Dependent of a disabled veteran that using VA Education Benefits
• Dependent of a veteran that died, not serving on Active Duty, Reserves, or Guard using VA Education Benefits
