I worked with the Freedom Committee of Orange County, California, a group of veterans, with their program for living history. My mentor was Denise Weiland a senior member of this group. Living history is bringing veterans into the classroom to talk with students about their experiences. This requires a lot of coordination and hard work.
On Monday the 23rd I worked at Newport Harbor High School, at 600 Irvine Ave, Newport Beach, CA 9266. I was there to observe and assist a small group interviews with students and veterans. While occasionally muddled and confusing veterans’ stories really were fascinating. It was not only the stories themselves that was the best part of the internship. It was the way the veterans would become so happy in telling them, and the students so enraptured in the hearing. It really was fun to watch the students connect with the veterans and connecting with them myself.
The low light of the internship was the plane flight, it took a day to get here and it was brutal. The other lowlight was that this job involved a lot of social interaction and as an autistic person that is very draining. A third was the racism and sexism some veterans expressed in their speeches. Other than the intense social interaction, which nearly gave me a migraine, these things were fairly minor. In total I had a lot of fun and more importantly learned a lot from this internship.
One of the more important things I learned from this internship is that I don’t want to work in California; I dislike the hyper social, flaky, culture. I also learned a lot about how working with a living history program feels like. It was more social than I imagined. This knowledge will affect my life plan in that I am sure I don’t want to go to college or pursue a career in California. I also think I am more inclined to seek a career as a Librarian than as a schoolteacher, given that enjoyed working in a library much more than working in a
