For We had to do 50 pushups in six inch deep mud and run around a course that was determined by our cadet. When we finished PT we started activities, such as a “zodiac” race and relays. After we finished the zodiac race we were given a challenge by a cadet to recite the Phonetic Alphabet. One of the other scouts in our crew knew the entire Phonetic Alphabet and was awarded a piece of West Point “Brass”. When our group finished with the cadet’s challenge we started a stretcher relay through the woods. Before I joined the military I used to wrestle and play football so my build was set on a weight of 250 I was pretty big then wrestling cut me down to like 215 but it wasn’t too long before I put the weight back on. Now what I meant by improving myself mentally is like I had the mindset of a punk ass I sold drugs barley got by was always getting fucked up on something and I didn’t really take anything serious and I missed my train for college so I was like man what is their for me to do so it was the military. I knew that it would be the best choice I could make for myself at that point and time in my life.…

Along with the other three new recruits, I walked to the desk where a Sergeant was waiting. We approached him with apprehension and expected him to start his tyranny immediately on us as I’ve seen it on YouTube. We addressed him in the best way our little civilian minds knew how to do it, from reading online posts. The Sergeant just kind of giggled and had us fill out some paperwork and then to get on the bus. Alas, he was not a Drill Sergeant but a bus driver. He treated us like cattle (we will later found out that being treated like…

Being a marine is something that was always encouraged in my family growing up. Of what has now become a tradition in my family with my grandfather and father being marines, I have always felt the marine presence in family growing up. I have been raised with a strong discipline and insured with a strong work ethic. I was taught early on that if I want something I have to work for it and that has how I have gone about every task in my life. I left for basic training on July 30, 2008, and arrived in Fort Leonard Wood Missouri on July 31, 2008. Before we entered into our extreme training, we processed into the Army for a whole week at reception. On the day of actual basic training, we realized our great lives changed to instructions all day, miserable feelings, separation from family, and extreme exhaustion. Although, this was our life much more horrifying things were about to happen. We finally realized all the negative feelings we were having seemed to get worse, such as receiving a shark attack from our drill sergeants, we were told when to eat, we were told when to shower, and when to go to sleep.…

This is when the real life changer began. Soon after reporting to Lewis, I was notified that we were on orders to be in Afghanistan in 3 months for a 15 month deployment. I knew it was going to be different over there but I had no clue of how or what it was really like to be over at war.…
