For if the horses could not do their job, then the riders could not find joy and a place to escape to. That is when I knew I wanted to become a veterinarian and be able to give back to my community.
Convinced of my passion to study veterinary medicine, I have concentrated my undergraduate studies at the University of Central Florida (Go Knights!) in Biology where I will earn my Bachelors of Science degree this summer. I have taken a plethora of challenging courses that have provided me a broader concentration of the sciences. I believe this demanding course load has given me the knowledge to pursue my advanced degree, the dedication required to succeed, the necessary organizational skills needed in graduate school, and the perseverance for the rigors that lie ahead of me as a future veterinarian student. I have handled and cared for a variety of animals there including African and Red Footed Tortoises, Great Horned , Eastern Screeched and Barred Owls, an Emu, a Red Tailed Hawk, Lemurs, Goats and Fox Squirrels just to name a few. From there I started shadowing Dr. G, a local veterinarian, where I was exposed to the true realities that come with the duties of being a veterinarian. I will always remember the first time that Dr. G invited me to observe an euthanasia of a dog. Dr. G not only showed compassion toward this dog that he cared for since he was a puppy, but also to the client’s young child that was having trouble coping with the imminent death of his beloved dog. After shadowing for several months, Dr. G recognized my enthusiasm for animals and offered me a part-time paid position as a Kennel/Technician Assistant where I was able to participate in hands on animal care. I drew blood, ran fecal and heartworm tests, restrained dogs, filled syringes to prepare for annual vaccinations, took temperatures, and dispensed and educated the client on how to administer the medications.
