Veterinary Technician Speech

Career Speech Brushing a cat’s teeth are equally as important as brushing your own. Brushing your own cat’s teeth may bee too much work though, but don’t worry, a vet tech will do it for you. This is just one of many responsibilities of a veterinary technician. A vet tech may also prep animals for surgery, communicate with pet owners, assist a vet in surgery, and much more. This job was selected for me because of my love for animals. I also love to learn new technical skills, work with equipment, provide information, cope with unpleasant situations, and staying organized. I am not interested in being a veterinary technician because of its ever changing work schedule, insane hours, and very low pay.

Many say that a vet tech is just
like a nurse in the veterinary world or a link between vets and owners. They are responsible for the care of the animals, the preparation of the surgeries, assisting the veterinarians during surgery, and most importantly, communicating with the worried pet owners. Veterinary technicians educate owners on their pets medical needs as well as their status during long surgeries. To be a vet tech, you cannot mind getting your hands dirty or dealing with out of control and frightened animals. They only work indoors, usually at pet clinics or animal hospitals. Besides pet clinics and animal hospitals, vet techs may work at horse farms, shelters, zoos, and research facilities. They on average work 7-9 hours each day. A vet tech will work 35-45 hours each week. Those hours will often times include weekends, holidays, and overtime.

A veterinary technician often starts out as a part-time worker or a volunteer.
A volunteer obviously makes no money but they do get a lot of experience. To volunteer at a pet clinic, you must at least have a high school diploma and be studying for the post-secondary qualification in veterinarian technology. A part time worker has similar requirements, but they work a little bit more and get paid minimum wage. A part-time worker will have to communicate with owners, assist vet techs, schedule appointments. The next level in this career path is a veterinary technician. At this level, the average money made per year is $30,000. This is way below the average pay of an American which is $50,000 per year. This job requires a certificate of completion of the Veterinary Technician Program. Vet techs also must have a certification from their state and on the job experience. Veterinary technicians help the vets during surgery, take x-rays, prescribe medicine, and communicate with pet owners. The highest promotion of this job is a surgical nurse or a supervisor. Workers in this position get paid between $30,000 and $55,000 per year. This position requires you to have been a vet tech for several years. Some of the responsibilities of this job are doing blood work, assisting vets, taking x-rays, talking to pet owners, prescribing medicine, supervising the vet techs, and billing
clients.

According to Joni from career cruising, the best aspect of being a veterinary technician is being able to handle the animals. A vet tech prepares the animals for surgery and other responsibilities allowing them to be with the animal. Joni also mentioned that the schedule is very exciting. The schedule of a veterinary technician is very busy and different each day. Some vet techs can see 50 different pets each day. Joni believes that the worst part of this job is parting with the death of all of the pets. She said that this is by far the hardest part of being a vet tech. Joni also complained that of her low pay. The average veterinary technician was paid $31,800 per year on average. The average adult makes $20,000 more than a veterinary technician does. Joni also mentioned that there was no room for promotions. Therefore, Joni has no opportunity to make more money than she is currently making. Besides all of the negative aspects, Joni overall likes her job because of the animals.

I am not fit to be a veterinary technician because of the ever changing work schedule, insane hours, and very low pay. I would not do very well with this job because I will need to be paid more to do everything I would like to do as an adult. $30,000 dollars is way below what I would need to be paid to be forced to experience death. I would cry every time I had to put down an animal. Also, I would rather be home with my family on holidays like Christmas and Thanksgiving instead of being at work. Even though this job doesn’t work for me, without it, the pets you love may not be treated in time to survive.
