According to the National Institute of Justice, 37% of women admitted to an emergency room for violence related injuries were abused by their partner. The Center for Disease Control reports that around 1.3 million women are physically abused each year in America. Teens can be involved in abusive relationships and may also become victims of date rape. The abuse is usually committed by a peer and can be as dangerous as abuse between adults. Children in homes where one partner abuses the other partner are at risk of being abused too. Just witnessing domestic violence in the home can have harmful effects on the child. If violence or threat of violence has happened more than once or twice it is extremely likely to happen again. The violence gets worse as time progresses and it increases in severity and frequency. In the United States, domestic violence makes up about 20% of the nonfatal violent crimes women experience and 3% of the nonfatal violent crimes men experience. Domestic violence calls are challenging for police because they witness the repetitive abuse against the same victims constantly. The victims may or may not want to part from their abuser making it harder to keep them safe.Police still view these calls as dangerous and take them very serious. Contrary to popular belief, it is possible to escape violent relationships. Law enforcement agencies responding to crime incidents are required by Arkansas’s Victim’s Bill of Rights and Laura’s Card Act 873 to inform victims in writing of their victim’s rights. Officers have to inform victims of the availability of services: medical, housing, counseling, financial, social, legal, and emergency services. Also, officers must inform victims about how to get orders of protection, how to access public records related to the case, and about the Arkansas Crime Victims Reparations Board. There are ways to overcome domestic violence. You can build relationships with other people that have been through your same situation. You can also receive medical help from specialist.
