In the story “Seventh Grade” by Gary Soto Victor had many embarrassing moments that he learned from during his first day of seventh grade. For example , in the text it stated that Victor’s English teacher asked him to provide a noun his response was “Teresa.” (para 24)This was embarrassing, since some of the girls giggled because they knew that Victor had a crush on Teresa. This is when Victor should have learned to think before you reply and not to blurt out the first thing that comes to mind he was just focused on Teresa not noticing what was happening around him. Another, embarrassing moment Victor had was when he pretended he knew french however, when Mr.Bueller(his French teacher) started speaking to Victor in French he did…

Pencey Prep is a boarding school for boys located in Agerstown, Pennsylvania that Holden was attending at the beginning of the novel. It is the fourth school Holden has attended and is later the fourth school he is kicked out of because of his poor marks. Pencey Prep is where the reader is able to get their first glance of Holden's lonesome character, strong opinion of phonies and the fact that he does not apply himself as he fails four out of five classes. At Pencey Prep, the theme of “alienation as a form of self protection” arises as it becomes clear that Holden can not maintain a close relationship with anybody. Holden's alienation and distance towards others is made clear after he agrees to write an English composition for his roommate, Stradlater. The composition is about a baseball glove that used to belong to his younger brother, Allie who died from leukemia when Holden was only thirteen. After the death Holden never wanted to get close to another person so that he would never have to feel the pain of loosing someone he loved and cared about once again. Lastly, at Pencey Prep, we are introduced to another important character, Jane Gallagher; an old friend of Holden that is going on a date with his “secret slob [and] Year Book handsome” (27) roommate, Stradlater. Before leaving Pencey Prep Holden is too afraid to go say hi to Jane in the lobby, in case she was not the innocent, perfect girl he grew to love in the…
He appears to be thirty years old or more, but he attempts to seduce Connie with his shiny car and his rugged appearance to go with him for a “ride”. She resists him but he refuses to take no for an answer. His persistence begins to frighten her and she retreats into the house. He gives her the option of going with him, or staying in the house and calling the police which if she did, then he would go in the house to get her. She becomes so terrified that she can’t even call for help. Once the wave of fear passes over her, she is left only as an empty emotionless shell. She walks to the door to see Arnold Friend’s arms outstretched, and she capitulates and goes to him. The situation Connie was in conveys Oates’ idea that adolescent loss of innocence can be displayed by making life changing decisions. Connie is confronted by what many would consider an evil force. She repels his advances, but she realizes that she isn’t strong enough to hold him off forever. So she gives in to evil’s temptations and her life will ultimately be changed forever, of which the result is something we’ll never…

The United States drastically changed in 1954 due to integration occurring in schools all throughout the country. Prior to integration, children were placed into schools based on their race. Ariette lounged in front of the luminescent computer, mulling about the last three months of middle school. Warm lights seeped between the blinds of the open window, tangling with the shadows of the room. The air was still, the only perceivable movement within the room being her steady breathing.…
Julie shuddered as she passed the doors on her way out of the Riffenburg Middle School. The chilly fall air was bringing goose-bumps to her bare skin. As she walked up to the soccer game, she was deciding what team she would want to be on. “Can I play?” She asked the boys, ready to run around.…
Four years of your life are dedicated to high school, and some may say it's the best four years of your life, or the worst four years of your life. Now, for some people, high school never ends, and those people are teachers. Teachers always get the worst end of the stick, they have to deal with grouchy teenagers, irresponsible teenagers, but the worst of all are freshman.…
In order for the reader to fully comprehend the severity, no matter how seemingly conjured, imagined or exaggerated, of the situation in which I found myself as a young, innocent 1st grader, it must be understood that when attending a very conservative, private, Christian school, at even the slightest mention of kissing, the horrified reaction of those who heard might have been the same if you had suggested genocide nonchalantly.…
All stories have conflict. Conflict is used to make a story interesting. Conflicts allows characters to interact with one another in different ways to reveal their personality. The main conflict in “Seventh Grade” is internal. It takes place in Victor’s Mind. In “Melting Pot” the conflicts are external. They take place between groups of people. In an essay, write about whether these conflicts have winners.…
‘Oranges are Not the Only Fruit’ is a novel which often uses allegory to create depth and meaning to the novel by blurring the line between fact and fiction. The use of allegory adds to our understanding of ‘Oranges’ as a whole in many different ways.…
I walked into school with a frown on my face just like every other day since “the accident”. I can’t think about it or else I will start to cry. I wish my mother and father- I can’t think about it. I’m tearing up right now. As I push the doors open to Jefferson Middle school, I remember something. My homework. Great. Another few assignments not done. Ever since “the accident” I can’t stop thinking about it. It distracts me from class, resulting in not understanding the lesson which makes it hard for me to do my homework. And as you can guess, my grades are suffering. After “the accident” I went to live with my uncle. It’s okay here, but I would really rather live with my aunt. Aunt Janet is the best. She takes me places and spends a lot…

Starting first grade is one of my first, and best, memories. It was not just one day that made this a great experience; it was the entire week leading up to it. I got to do all kinds of things to get ready. My mom bought me new clothes and new shoes. I even got to go get my nails done! It was my special week.…
