Video Analysis: Cut It Short
The video I am presenting is called "Cut it Short." The video depicts a beautiful young Indian woman with long hair getting her hair done. Not too many women in India would get their hair cut short because long hair signifies beauty. The woman in the video will keep repeating to her hairdresser to "cut it short" and the reason behind it will shock you.

The director uses four techniques in the video. The first two techniques are cinematography and editing.
[0.10 - 0.57]
Cinematography means to use the camera to shoot at different angles or to zoom in and out. Editing is to put clips together by cutting back and forth. Whenever the young woman says to "cut it short" the director shoots a close up of her face and then her hair.

Acting skills in here are shown through the young lady's expression. That clip just now had the young woman keep a stern face. Her expression is stern because she is very serious and committed to cutting it short. [0.57 - 1.30]
Near the end you get an expression of sadness from the young woman when you see tears running down her face. In addition, you see expressions of disbelief from the other customers in the salon. Everyone's expression feeds into the moment and makes the content convincing to the audience.
As for the music, it starts off sort of lively during the beginning of the video which includes talkative women, but then suddenly everything stops as the young woman grabs the side of her hair and says a shocking statement. However, you may not have noticed that all sounds have stopped because you may have been so in tuned with this scene.
The hairdresser assumes that the reason she wants her hair short is because she has no time to do her hair. However the music turns dramatic when there were sounds of "ooo ooo" playing in the background. The young woman even says to "make it even shorter, so that no one can hold it like this again." The reason the young woman is telling her hairdresser that she wants it short is because she had been assaulted and has been grabbed by the hair. The music and this statement bring out the emotional feelings towards the

This cuts to a dark medium-wide shot of what appears like a silhouette of the character. With a pan, it remains dark until a desk light is turned on, revealing a crowded and seemingly disorganized office space. Another cut reveals a medium-close shot of the main character with overhead lighting that is supposed to be coming solely from the desk lamp. This relatively stationary shot, only panning when the characters moves, focuses on the distraught character trying to comfort and make sense of the proceeding events to the clip. This relatively dialogue free shot reveals not much to the audience; only that this character would like to record observations. This shot is very crowded with visuals which also add to the confusing theme being portrayed. One final cut to a close up shot with similar lighting finally gives the audience insight into the mind of the character as they begin noting their observations. This shot is clear from distractions and gives the audience some relief and closure that has been build up with the proceeding cuts. Altogether there are 5 different shots being presented, all of which have very distinct length and composure that proceed to confusion and closure to the audience, as well as a smooth development…

The Sarah Bartmaan video today had some very shocking mistreatment of African Americans. I don’t understand how Europeans could justify their actions of treating another human being like that. Also to know that people still went to see her pickled remains for almost a century after her death showed that it was more than one person that contributed to this. People thought that African Americans were a different species and weren’t even human. We can also see this in our society today. I grew up outside the Bronx, and my school was mainly comprised of African American and Hispanic people. My cousins that lived just outside the city in the suburbs, went schools were the population was 90% white. It is almost like our races still keep us separate…

The director uses special effects to persuade his audience his message by using distance from the subject. He displays this when he is interviewing teachers is it a close up on the teacher to show that what they have to say is important. He also uses point of view, by having the camera outside the scene creating an objective effect. I believe the special effect contribute to an emotional appeal in this documentary because it is real life stories. The happy and sad moments are all captured to show it is not an easy life for these children.…

Filmmakers use many different tools to help their audience understand the message in their films, and to better understand the psychological nuances of their characters. Some of these tools include acting, framing, cinematography, and editing. These tools can be used to show any range of emotion, in many different ways; extreme close ups on characters to show uneasiness, tears on an actors face to show sadness, fast cutting to make the audience feel rushed, or cool or warm colors to convey emotion. Cleo from 5 to 7, Persona, and Memories of Underdevelopment all offer subtle psychological representations of the characters portrayed.…

Music is used to help people of every ethnicity, religion, and lifestyle, cope with different struggles, times of enjoyment, and life itself. But, what is it about music that makes it so therapeutic? It’s the fact that no matter what the genre of music is, it’s what message that artist is putting out into the world. It’s the beat, the tone, and the emotion behind the lyrics is what makes listeners feel the way they do because it speaks on a specific aspect of life and what someone can be going through.…

Waging a living is based on four people’s lives on achieving the American Dream and leaving the poor to become a better person financially and overall. The four people in the video are Jean R, Jerry L, Mary V, and Barbara B. All four have interesting stories and many hardships to overcome. The two most interesting moments that struck me in the video were about Jerry. Jerry was homeless at one point and lives paycheck to paycheck. I could not imagine my life depending on my next paycheck or the next time I was going to get paid from my job. Jerry’s story hit me because he was rock bottom, and by working as a security guard at the hotel he was able to get off the streets and live in a small apartment. He always had a positive attitude and never missed a day of work. Although Jerry had to live pay check to pay check, he…
