Video Analysis: Lale Kin
I must start off by saying that the video was very interesting and eye opening. I have spent a number of years looking at movies and television shows that designed to depict the history and imgae of African-Americans after slavery however, this video allowed me to see a more intimate vision of this time periods. Lalee Kin is an African-American woman living in Tallachatcie, Mississippi as what to seems as a lower class citizen. However, at the beginning of the video she had received a grant from the government to purchase a trailer. Therefore, in comparison to her other citizen in her town she might be doing really well. In correlation to Lalee getting a new trailer she displayed a few moments of praise and showing honor to God. Indicting
that her religious belief is that of a Christian. At one point Lalee was shown with her grandchildren singing hymnals to then. She even asked Redman to say his prayer to the other children during this time. Based on the video, I am able to detect that culture of the town is one that is known as a primitive culture. Primitive culture is derived from the anthropology texts where a society is believed to lack written, cultural, technology or economic development. Lalee lives in a small rural town in Mississippi called Tallachatcie where the cultural is behind the majority of Mississippi. The Delta County school system indicated this when they addressed the students low performance compared to the other counties. Lalee’s personal culture is one that seems to be based on her religion and her family. Throughout her conversations she spent a lot of moments referencing to God and how blessed she was. Lalee stated that she loved to a house full of children. She has 11 children, 38 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Where others would look at this video and feel that Lalee did not have a lot to be happy about, she felt different. She had a home to call her own. She was able to be free from the mind set of having to be awaken by a gun shot from the white man to go pick cotton. In addition she had her family around her and that bought her the most joy.
