Video Game Literature Review
Video Game Literature Review Violent video games are said to have a negative effect on those who play them, but there is also the debate that violent video games help those who play them rather than hurt them. There is a rating system that separates games into groups from games for everyone all the way to games that can only be bought if you 're eighteen and older. The main questions with this rating system seem to be, "Where do we draw the line," and "Who draws the line?" All to often younger teens get their hands on the video games that are made for the eighteen and older crowd, but will the game actually have a negative effect on the teen, or will it help the teen by allowing them to vent some anger or make them feel good about themselves because they solved a difficult puzzle within the game. As you may have seen there are many contrasting viewpoints, but before we explore the contrasting views on violent video games, we should try to understand our own views, and those of others who take positions that are different from ours, by reviewing some key insights. First we can start with the insights of a few different people who don 't think violent video games are bad for teens. From there we can move to a couple of pieces that think violent video games are bad. To finish we will look at an article doesn 't take a stance either way, but does provide some very good facts. Greg Costikyan, also known as Designer X, is an American game designer and science fiction writer. Costikyan 's career spans nearly all genres of gaming, including hex-based war games, role-playing games, board games, card games, computer games, online games and mobile games. Several of his games have won Awards. In Costikyan 's argument, "The Problem of Video Game Violence is Exaggerated," he tackles violence in video games from many different angles such as video game advertising, the successful way to incorporate violence into video games, how violence is part of human nature, and

From what I believe is that video games DO NOT make us violent in our lifetime. One out of the many people that agrees is the psychologist, Christopher Ferguson. Christopher Ferguson believes that video games do not make us violent in life. As he quoted, “Although there was some studies that find aggression, there also studies which find no evidence for any links at all.” So what he’s saying is that there were some studies that did show that aggression in people, but there also studies that showed that there wasn’t any…

This has resulted in video game impacting American politics, television, pop music and Hollywood. However, in the past decade, there have been countless controversies surrounding the production of video games, especially games of a violent nature such as the very popular “Grand Theft Auto” and "Need for Speed" that are marketed to children and teenagers. The controversy lies on the matter of responsibility—specifically, are marketers and video games producers responsible for the contents of video games or are parents responsible for ensuring their adolescent children do not have access to games made for mature audiences. Through an objective examination of the legal, moral, and social responsibility of producing violent video games, this paper will present a thorough analysis of both sides of the debate on the matter.…

A majority of the video games on the market today contain some form of violence in them, and about 73% of them actually reward the play for the violence. ("National Youth Violence", 2008) This means that the ultimate goal of the game is to perform an act of violence, whether it be killing a person or destroying a building. Not only is this teaching children that violence is acceptable, but it is also showing them that destruction and devastation can be fun and rewarding. Dr. Cheryl K. Olson, co-director of the Center for Mental Health and the Media, states that "it's not the violence per se that's the problem, it's the context and goals of the violence." (Harding, 2008) She is basically saying that violence in video games is acceptable if it is played as a side factor, but it causes problems when it is the main focus of the game. This may not seem like a big deal since the children are not killing people in real-life, but research has shown that these video games are having internal effects on the children who are playing them and are causing developmental…

In my most recent essay I wrote of the violence attributed to video games in light of various shootings and other tragedies that occurred in the past year or so. In this essay I argued that despite their violent content, video games are not completely to blame for acts of violence committed by children. Throughout this essay I tried to convince the reader by, first, establishing my own credibility with video games, then sharing my own experiences with violent games, and providing both empirical data and valuable insight from trusted sources.…

In the United States video games and violence have become synonymous to each other. Some of the most popular games today tend to be the most violent. This has brought up the issue of video game violence and its relation to adolescent violence. Many argue that video game violence primes anger and aggressive thoughts in the individual using them. But research and proof of this argument has been limited, inconclusive, or contradictory which has brought up debate over the issue. Two scholarly research articles, “Video Games and aggressive thoughts, feelings, and behavior in the laboratory and in life.” by Craig A Anderson and Karen E Dill and “Video Games and Youth Violence: A Prospective Analysis in Adolescents” by Christopher J Ferguson, published in 2000 and 2010 respectively, debate this topic and discuss the psychological effects of violent video games on the user. The article by Anderson and Dill asserted that video game exposure increased aggressive traits long-term and short-term while the research article by Ferguson made the claim that outside conditions and factors such as personality traits, family environment, and depressive symptoms far better indicated increased aggression or youth violence than violent video game play. Both articles conducted their own studies in attempts to measure the correlation between video game violence and aggression level. However, Ferguson’s article had a more complete argument, accounting for more outside third variables, expanding upon data from previous conducted studies, and counter-arguing opposing studies and evidence against video game violence. Overall Ferguson’s article provided a stronger argument against video games causing violence and aggression, drawing upon more references and evidence, counter-attacking and pointing out flaws of previous research conducted, and analyzing numerous other factors.…

Video games have always been a great landmark in the history of the human race and how great and advanced they’ve become since their creation. Video games also have their own timeline and certain points in time in which major controversy has arisen. Newscasters have made full reports on how video games are the major contributor to thoughts and actions of violence in the minds of all who have purchased them, either being adults and all the way down to children of all ages. Even though newscasters and reporters may be seen as respected and credible sources this topic has always pinned video games as the culprit but they were never the ones to blame.…

In the article "Violence in Video Games," (Anonymous, found on 123helpme.com) the writer is adamant about the fact that violence in video games/music/movies is not to blame for violence in society. He/she believes that the violence in games actually decreases violent tendencies in individuals by allowing people to vent their frustrations without hurting anyone. Also the media is just latching on to the idea that violence in games promotes violence in real life to gain ratings, because it's an easy scapegoat. The media glorification of the psychopathic violence that sometimes occurs (and is supposedly related to video games) actually gives the perpetrators the attention they want.…

The argument whether violent games lead to violent behavior or not is a strongly debated subject. It's been found that for teens playing these games have had a slight calming effect. Cheryl Olsen, an independent researcher whose study was published in Springer's Journal of Youth and Adolescence found that contrary to popular belief that playing these games did not lead to increased aggression. They found instead that youth violence is caused more by stress and aggressiveness rather than violent videogames. Christopher Ferguson, a psychology…
