Relationships we have with others can positively or negatively affect our lives forever. In “A Rupee Earned” and “To Everything There Is a Season”, the protagonists are positively influenced by a family member, maturing them and having a positive effect on their lives. In “A Rupee Earned”, the father teaches the son how to make his own money and be less dependent of others. In “To Everything There Is a Season”, the boy’s family tells him that Santa Claus does not exist, helping him mature.…
Nevertheless, Mark R. Rank notifies that a vast majority of the poor work extensively. The reason that poverty is so common is a result of failings at economic and political levels rather than individual shortcomings (Rank 3 of 3). Obviously, Mark R. Rank believes that although many of the poor have trouble getting themselves above the poverty line, they put in lots of effort to surviving and helping their family members. Likewise, Jade Walker’s purpose of writing her editorial is to share stories of the homeless. For example, she interviews Gina Cooper and her son, who have to vacate their home because she has not payed her rent. After a few months as nomads, they find shelter and support with Home & Hope. Gina Cooper has saved enough money to afford housing on her own. (Walker 2 of 5). Undoubtedly, Jade Walker proves that people in poverty work hard to overcome it. In all texts the author’s purpose is to teach readers that even in the hardest times one can achieve greatness and their…

Poverty, the lack of life’s necessary needs is not something an individual hopes to strive in life. In the book, poverty is the driving force for the individuals living in Annawadi to have tension between them. Asha, a kind mother…
We all had expectations of this book, and it ended up becoming more than we had thought, as I can say the same for Barbara Ehrenreich with beginning her project and in part of the outcome with more that she thought, but as for the way she lived she was still at the bottom. By documenting this emotional experience she is connecting with the readers, as the author, Ehrenreich, exposes how being in the lower class forces you to work ten times harder while still getting low…
Abdul Husain, in particular, is a guiding light in such a dark time and corrupt community. Even though corruption is rampart and it would be so much easier to just follow suit, Abdul sticks to his beliefs and lives his life with his morals intact. He does not have an easy life, and it doesn’t keep him out of trouble, but at least he has a reason to be proud. This is a very heart-wrenching look at a community forced to be a slum and the horrors that they have to deal with every day. However, there is a strong theme of staying true to a moral path no matter what the rest of the world does. It might not always be the easy path, but it is the most respected…
With time, I built a strong bond with Jimmy boy. Slowly, Jimmy boy began to realize that there is a world away from his which was quite different; quite the ‘other’ from the one he was so used to. A world that didn’t live in Wall Street executive boardrooms, but rather on the streets of hell; a world that was quite not his American suburban dream, but that lived in cardboard boxes near shopping plazas. Jimmy boy began to explore the depravity of this world and shredded his all American image to embrace the bleeding world of poverty, hunger and marginalization. Suddenly, Jimmy boy was a transformed man. He felt, looked and acted more like a human God. No longer was he consumed by the American Dream; no longer was he fascinated by money; no longer was he drunk with the idea of owning a mansion; and no longer did he want to remain ‘American’, i.e. be oblivious to the world that stretched beyond his comfort zone. Suddenly, He began to feel quite strongly for everyone and everything that was not his: scarcity, impoverishment and people who live at society’s edges.…
Social inequity is an arising issue has been affecting billions of people around the world for centuries, and it needs more attention! Even innocent teenagers have been exposed to these types of prejudices. Of course, the effects of it are not good. Different kinds of literature are useful tools for shining a light on social injustice, and writers are taking advantage of this fact and writing many novels about social inequities. Authors have been writing articles and stories about racial, social, financial and gender inequities which reflect to today’s society to try and galvanize readers into action.…
Writer, Toni Case Bambara, in his short story, “The Lesson” explains and refers the norm in which Bambara accredits to a group of kids who have been exposed to a number of social, economic, and political issues. Sylvia and the rest of the group of kids are not aware of the significant but negative impact that these factors will have on their lives if they do not realize what kind of system they are living and depending upon. Based on some bad ramifications on the personal and social department regarding kids in their societies, all these factors can be effective. Being set aside, the main purpose in the short story is not to take advantage of the opportunities given, but to understand and be grateful for what they have, but also to be determined to thrive for more giving them ambition.…
In the United States of America, and globally, rising social inequality is very much a part of the average teenager’s life, whether they see someone who experiences it or are the victim of it. Also, literature can be a huge tool to have an impact on social inequality of an adolescent's life. Many problems, can be addressed by authors and even at times remedied with something as simple as a book.…
In “Flavio’s Home” the home life is beyond awful. The lives of everyone in the slums is just poor and miserable, they have no money and no clean supplies to live on. In this essay I will tell you about the living and health situations, water and food supply, and how the slums have changed. It is a shame because these people live like this day in and day out for their whole lives and it never changes. “I’ve never lost my fierce grudge against poverty. It is the most savage of all human afflictions, claiming victims who can’t mobilize their efforts against it, who often lack strength to digest what little food they scrounge up to survive. It keeps growing, multiplying, spreading like a cancer.” (Parks 1) Even in today’s world, there are so many people living in poverty. It has not changed at all, in fact it has moved all the country.…
The electoral college has created a political divide in America. In this day and age the last thing America needs is a division among it’s people. With pressing issues like terrorism, immigration and equality, America’s people need to be united but the issue of the electoral college is one of the things preventing that. Today I will be focusing on the electoral college. One of the many problems with the electoral college is the lack of laws supporting the popular candidate which means the college can choose the less popular candidate and by choosing the less popular candidate America is left with angry and violent citizens. Another problem with the electoral college is that the candidates don’t campaign in every state: they only campaign…
Sitting in a university classroom, coming from a fairly privileged socioeconomic background it is difficult to image the experiences of inhabitants living in Indian slums. Katherine Boo’s novel, ‘Behind the Beautiful Forevers’, coupled with course material helps begin to depict a story of poverty that many North Americans have been sheltered from. Therefore, in this paper chapter’s one and two from Boo’s novel will be analysed based on theoretical content presented in the first half of the ‘Development and the City’ course. Discussing such topics as socio-economic relations, gender differences and aspirations of those living within slums, this paper will attempt to highlight some of the constraints these individuals encounter. In addition,…
“In One Slum, Misery, Work, Politics and Hope” published in the New York Times and written by Jim Yardley exposes what life is like inside one of the most densely populated and largest slums in the world. Yardley breaks life in the slum into four segments, “misery” discusses the lack of infrastructure, “work” covers how the economy and industry are run, “politics” explains the inequality in the urban landscape of Mumbai, while “hope” demonstrates the payoffs of hard work for those living in Dharavi.…
