On June 8th 793ce foreign ships brought an unexpected surprise to the Lindisfarne monastery, the Northmen had arrived. This attack marked the beginning of the Viking Age, an era of raids that shook the western world until its end at the battle of Hastings in 1066. These Northmen arrived and promptly the “heathen miserably destroyed God's church by rapine and slaughter .” It is important to note that the Vikings had an oral tradition and no known sources exist depicting events from their perspective. “We see the attack through the eyes of the victims, who spread the word that the Vikings were bloody and violent. In fact, they were violent, but no more than anyone else at the time. Compared to Charlemagne’s armies, the Vikings were amateurs.…
Around 800 C.E. a large group of people called the Vikings sailed down from their homes in Denmark, Norway, and Sweden and started terrorizing Europe. During their 300-year time, they did many things, but one of the most important was helping develop Feudalism. The Viking raids helped shift power to lords and nobles and away from kings.…
The Vikings came from what is known as Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. During the time from the 8th to the 11th centuries the Vikings traveled in their longboats to the British Isles and the coast of Europe raiding the settlements.…

Carroll was born to a working-class family of Irish descent, and grew up on New York City 's Lower East Side. When he was about 11 (in the sixth grade) his family moved north to Inwood in Upper Manhattan where he attended Good Shepherd School.[citation needed] He was taught by the LaSalle Christian Brothers, and his brother in the sixth grade noted that he could write and encouraged him to do so. In fall 1963, he entered public school, but was soon awarded a scholarship to the elite Trinity School.[5] He attended Trinity from 1964–1968.…
Fearsome. Barbarian. Horrible. Words to describe the Medieval Vikings, who changed history as we know it. Indeed, these pirates who began to raid in 793 terrified Europe, making Europe adapt rapidly. Nonetheless, there was a whole lot of terror, however the Vikings actually helped certain people out. The Viking raids lead to the rise of feudalism, which helped lords gain a whole lot of power.…
From 793 to 1066 AD, the Vikings struck terror into the heart of every European. Their sudden, ferocious raids on villages, churches, and monasteries made them both hated and feared. However, the Vikings accomplished more than merely destroying towns. In fact, they were the best explorers of the age, venturing as far south as Africa and as far west as North America. Wherever they settled, they altered the cultural fabric of the conquered area. This paper attempts to analyze specific changes the Vikings initiated in the places they settled, particularly in the British Isles. Using traditional archaeological evidence and newer techniques, archaeologists have been able to find other effects the Vikings had on European society besides looting.…
The Vikings were people who lived from 800-1100 AD. Most of the lived in Scandinavia, but they also had colonies in places such as England, Ireland, Scotland, and many other places in Eastern Europe. The main language that they spoke was called Old Norse, and it has become the basis of many languages today, including Norwegian, Danish, and Swedish. The word Viking comes from the Old Norse word vikingr, which means "camp", or "dwelling place". They wrote in an alphabet known as Runes. Runes were also used to write many Germanic languages at this time.…
Viking raids which began in the late 8th century brought about an end to monastic centres and aristocratic life. These raids are presumed to have interrupted the work on the Book of Kells. Later Gospel books aren’t as intricately illuminated. In the early Viking period, periodic raids on the rich monasteries of Ireland and England and on the north-western coasts of Europe including the raid on England's Christian monastatic community of Lindisfarne Island in 793, the reign of Viking fear began. Viking craftsmen were excellent at woodwork and metalwork, jewelry from silver, gold and bronze, and weapons. Much of their jewelry contains design elements of Celtic art and earlier Roman art pieces. Many of these designs are popular and are used today for jewelry and tattoos. I have a Celtic bracelet that I really like. I didn’t know much about the style other than the fact that I liked it, until now. They were skilled at pottery. During the Viking age, Norse people apparently did not create art for just decorative purpose but instead, Norse art is characterized by beautiful ornamentation of everyday objects. The Viking ships showed beautiful design and art forms that were truly unique. The ships timbers were crafted with abstracted animal forms and elaborate patterns of…
With the general growth of feminist work in many academic fields, it is hardly surprising that the research on the role and status of women in Viking age has attracted considerable attention in recent years. There is a substantial amount of research on this and the expanding corpus of research addresses itself to all of the major dimensions of Viking women 's lives. While some research has focused on evidence from literature, such as sagas, other work has sought to use evidence from archaeology, such as burials. This source difference results in a broad range of differing interpretation regarding the status and position of women in Viking Age.…
The Vikings were a sea-faring people from the North Western areas of Europe, specifically the area known as Scandinavia. Viking is actually a profession and not the actual type of people. The people were Norse and the term “Viking” in Norse equates to the English word “Pirate.”…
The Vikings were a powerful force in the history books. The Vikings had a need to raid and settle in other lands for these reasons land, revenge and wealth. The Vikings needed to raid and settle in other lands because Vikings lived in Scandinavia, in Scandinavia it is very hilly, covered in forest and had a lot of sandy soil which not idled for growing food. It is believed that the Viking raids start by the Frankish expansion. Charlemagne became the new Frankish king from 768 AD. He also forcefully converted his new subjects to Christianity. The Vikings noticed that trade was drying up and had to find a way to regain the Viking name. They started to raid other settlements and through that most Vikings became very wealth.…
The matter of Irish immigration was not new. Many had transited to Scotland in prior centuries; and a subsequent number found their way to plantations in the “New World” vis-à-vis exiles from the English crown following unsuccessful rebellions. While several clans amongst the neighboring Scots suffered similar expulsions—with tens of thousands banished following the failed Jacobite rebellions during the eighteenth century—any realistic comparisons to the Irish would short-sight centuries of political and religious oppression sustained by the Irish courtesy sitting English…
At first thought of the Vikings, the comic strip “Hagar the Horrible” comes to mind. As this is probably not a good basis for reference, it still can give slight glimpse, if not a distorted one, of the Viking culture. As for Viking art, a more in depth search must be done, for “Hagar” was unfortunately not actually made by the Vikings.…
