In the story, “Just Lather, That’s All” by Hernando Tellez, the barber would have been a coward had he killed Captain Torres because, when he killed the captain he was unarmed. Secondly, he would have to flee leaving all he had behind. Lastly, he would have been vulnerable. The barber was weak and afraid of killing captain Torres and to be called as the murderer of the captain. The barber would have been a coward because; he killed the captain when he was unarmed. As soon as the captain entered, “he took off his bullet – studded belt that his gun holster dangled from. He hung it up on a wall hook and placed his military cap over it” (48). The barber knew that the captain was unarmed and as per his…
The description of Just Lather, That’s All by Hernan do Tellez makes the setting more believable. The author is able to use descriptive language too effectively to describe the weather, the auditory and the imagery sense. Tellez used auditory imagery to express the thought of the barber. As the barber went back and forth contemplating weather to kill Captain Torres, the barber thought, “I could cut his throat just so- zip, zip” (Tellez 50).…
I chose the biographical nonfiction book With Malice Toward None: A Life of Abraham Lincoln by Stephen B. Oates. As one may guess, the book is about our 16th president, Abraham Lincoln. I am generally interested in Abraham Lincoln anyways, and I have heard good things about this book, so I decided to read it for the extension project, which made me part of Oates’ intended audience.…
The main character, the barber, an important character in the development of the story, has to deal with a life changing decision; he can either kill his enemy, Captain Torres, or he can choose a higher path and give him the perfect shave. Firstly, the barber has too much pride in his work. ‘’One of the tiny pores could be opened up and issue forth its pearl of blood. A good barber such as I prides…
Captain Torres should have been killed, as he was a cruel man who had killed and tortured in the past many. The barber had him right in his hands, but he didn't take the chance of killing him knowing that there would be an end of his killing and his terror. With Captain Torres dead, many civilians and rebels would be filled with relief that their life wouldn't be in danger every day. Many people would praise the barber for the deed that has been done to save many lives. However, at the same time, others would have gone to the barber to get revenge on Captain Torres.…
Ioannides and Tellez both talk about how altered our decisions become at times of war, and how the unexpected conquers the expected and it is then that the truth of one’s identity (protagonist) is unveiled. In Gregory “When the order came, it was like a thunderbolt” (Paos Ioannides 3), the author wishes to emphasize on the irony of the friendship of an inmate and the soldier, and how he gets to choose between friendship and duty to his country. This quote highlights how reality struck the author because he knew it was a do or die situation. In the end he does what he thinks is best for him and shoots Gregory. When the author says “You see, this Gregory was such a miserable little creature, such a puny little thing, such a nobody…” (Paos Ioannides 2), he’s portraying his altered side, his true reality because later in the text he declares Gregory as his friend. He tries to justify his actions by altering his thinking about Gregory. In Lather and Nothing Else the protagonist deals with the situation in a similar yet different way. The quote “you came so that I could shave you. And I’m doing the job honourably….I don’t want to stain myself with blood. Just lather, and nothing else” (Hernando Tellez 3), shows how the author analysed the consequences of killing the captain which costs him his career- his most valued possession, hence he chose his career over rebellion, though the captain was his enemy, he could have simply avenged the deaths of his fellow rebels and he wouldn’t have to live with the fact that he could have killed…
Both Ms. Strangeworth from “The Possibility of Evil” and Captain Torres from “Lather and Nothing Else” represent the villain archetype; however, Miss Strangeworth better represents it because she enjoys the evil she causes, whereas Captain Torres does not. First of all, the roles of the characters are shown as villains throughout both of the stories. In the case of Miss Strangeworth, it is when she sends her malicious messages to the town without regard for their feelings (Jackson 5). Meanwhile, Captain Torres is revealed as the villain when the barber remembers “...the sight of the mutilated bodies kept me from noticing the man who had directed it all” (Tellez 1) about the captain. The two of them do horrible things to their respective towns; Miss Strangeworth, by sending her…
The Screwtape Letters is a very important to me. It gives me the insight of how the devil does things to try to lure my soul into hell. It teaches me that some things that I may do are not necessarily good for my and my Christian lifestyle. Throughout this essay I will be citing examples from the book on how the evil uses the appearance of the good to further its aims. This book contains letters wrote by a demon named, Screwtape, who writes letters to his nephew, Wormwood, explaining on how to capture the soul of the good. The soul they are trying to capture is of the Patient. The Patient is a new Christian, he is continually having doubts and going back and forth between doing good things and…
The barber would have killed Captain Torres for the sake of the revolutionary group he was part of. However, there were risks that came with killing the captain: "I would have to flee, leaving all I have behind, and take refuge far away, far, far away. But they would follow until they found me." (Tellez, 16) Jack on the other hand, was mainly driven with the force of his own selfish reasons to be highly regarded among the boys, to get another chance at being leader. As seen in these stories as well as in human nature, a selfish motive is usually more motivating than a motive to help others; Jack decided to kill, while the barber decided not to because of the risks that were…
Paraphrasing: The Barbers were inferior to the Surgeons, although they also belonged to the Company of Barber Surgeons. They were only allowed to pull teeth or draw blood.…
Through the study of the three texts; Department 19 by Will Hill, ‘Macbeth’ the play and The Social Network by David Fincher, it is evident that literary villains are archetypes that often represent the evil side of human nature. One may argue that each villain has certain traits that allow the reader to be drawn to the terror and horror of their deeds yet also allow readers to reflect upon the society that has created such individuals. Authors stray their villains from the stereotype to keep the modern audience engaged.…
“Just Lather, That’s All” tends to set confliction in the minds of its readers. “The day he ordered the whole town to file into the patio of the school to see the four rebels hanging there, I came face to face with him for an instance. But the sight of the mutilated bodies kept me from noticing the face of the man who had directed it all, the face I was about to take into my hands,” said the barber. This quote shows the barber’s realization and emotion over the situation. “On the other hand I, with his razor in my hands, stroking and restroking his skin, trying to keep blood from oozing from these pores, can’t even think clearly. Curse him for coming, because I’m a revolutionary and not a murderer. And how easy it would be to kill him. And he deserves it. Does he? No! No one deserves to have someone else make the sacrifice of becoming a murderer. What do you gain by it? Nothing,” he thinks. This shows precisely the confliction and confusion of the barber’s emotions on the subject of murder.…

In almost everything you read or watch there is a villain. Villains have been used in stories for a very long time. One particular villain, Iago from the play Othello by Julius Caesar, is a very famous villain. Iago was an extremely bad guy in this play and was always up to no good. The character Iago and his traits have influenced many more modern villains. Iago influenced other villains with his criminal traits of being evil, egotistical, and dishonesty.…
