Every night either my mom or my dad would lay down next to me, gently rubbing my back or tracing my face, and sing me a very specific song as I would fall asleep. It is one of those songs that when one hears it in a crowded place one has to stop what they are doing and reminisce. It is a song that, if asked, one could sing completely through and not miss a beat. It is a song that when one grows old and is asked by their children or grandchildren or great-grandchildren their fondest memory of their youth, the answer is always that.
Most people have a specific item of interest that may illicit these feelings, maybe by holding an old stuffed animal or blanket, and while I have those items as well, the most significant part of my life so far would be characterized by the song “Rainbow Connection.” For a majority of my life, I did not know it was sung by the Muppets—specifically Kermit the Frog—and whenever I would hear it, I’d exclaim, “That’s the rainbow song my daddy sings!” At that time in my life, the song represented family. Following the intentional purpose the writers of the song had, the song acts as a motivational tool. For me, like Kermit himself, “Rainbow Connection” establishes my own driving urge for something more in life. It pushes me to work harder but to remember my roots and stay grounded. In a way, the song can be used as a comparison to my own life. While life may start with some negative aspects, following the lines “rainbows are only illusions, rainbows have nothing to hide”, as though if you look at life from a pessimistic viewpoint, it will appear just black and white. But not to worry, as life, like the song at the lines “so we've been told, and some choose to believe it. I know they're wrong, wait and see”, will turn around and it is up for oneself to make that decision on when they will find their own
