Van Gogh is my favorite artist from the Post-Impressionism era. I believe he used painting as an outlet to express his emotions, turmoil and inner demons. In the last couple of years of his life van Gogh was inspired be Japanese woodblocks and almond trees. Van Gogh was very close to his younger Theo and they kept in touch with each other through correspondence via postal service. In January in 1890, Theo had a son named him Vincent Williem. The Almond Blossom was a gift to Theo for celebrating the birth of his newborn son. The details of the branches and blossom buds are enhanced by the teal colored background. For example, Henri Rousseau created a very curious piece in his illustration that portrayed a gypsy woman sleeping in the middle of a desert. The moon is the focal point as it hangs over the scenery in the sky. The sky essentially descends starting from the right to the left with a light to a darker shade of blue. The lighting of the moon cast shadows on the hills of sand in the distance emphasizing the balance in the image. The distance from the hills to the closer subjects provide a large amount of space. Rousseau does not use bold lines but a very thin line to contour his subjects. The lion is at the head of the gypsy woman laying on a piece of cloth. It appears a little eerie as the dark shadowed lion looks straight at the viewer. The lighting of the moon highlights the lion’s mane giving it texture to it’s appearance. The colors on the gypsy woman’s clothing seems bold that receives assistance from the moon. The concept behind the image is to portray the uneasiness of a person’s vulnerable subconscious self during
