Violence, Racism, And Discrimination In Charlottesville
Violence, racism, and discrimination. These three words describe the events that should have never happened in Charlottesville, Virginia. White nationalists came to the city to protest the removal of a Robert E. Lee statue, supporters of the removal of the statue came to counter the protest. While the crowd was originally permitted to protest pecefully, violence erupted between the two groups, leading the city officials to deem it unlawful. City officials deployed riot police to remove the protesters when violent clashes occurred. More counter protesters took to the streets, wanting the white nationalist group out of Charlottesville. As police dispersed the crowds, James Alex Fields Jr. allegedly drove a silver Dodge Challenger into the crowds,

The Rodney King case is widely known across the United States and even some parts outside of the U.S.. This incident occurred in the year 1991 in Los Angeles. King resisted arrest and got physical with the officers. This caused him to be shot with a Taser gun knocking him to the floor. The electricity takes over the central nervous system, leaving him incapacitated (Sergo) . Yet even after being completely helpless the officers repeatedly beat King with a baton and kicked him. Three officers were left free of charge and the jury never reached a verdict for the fourth. This decision led to the Los Angeles riots that concluded with two officers being charged guilty.…

I decided to interview Lindy Swimm for this assignment because she lives and has been working in Charlottesville, Virginia for 30 years. This was exceptionally useful because upon graduation I desire to live in Charlottesville. In Charlottesville the average salary for an LCP who holds a Master’s of Science in Counseling is $54,750. This can fluctuate with certain certifications, years of experience, and whether you’re working for a company or a private practice. Counseling careers are prevailing across the U.S. as a whole, the demand is steadily increasing; however, funding is being cut for facilities nationwide. Charlottesville is a rather liberal town, being said there is a specific demand for expressive/creative therapy due to the high…

From 1877 up to the middle of the 1960s there was organized racial segregation in the United States. This was achieved because it was thought that blacks were believed to be inferior to whites. This organized segregation was done by a series of changes to the law in the south known as the Jim Crow laws. The first time that the United States government made a ruling whether or not these laws were actually legitimate under the US constitution was with the Plessey v Ferguson case. They were upheld granting states the ability to institute segregation. Sixty Years later these same laws affected the Brown v Board of Education case and they were considered unconstitutional. The Plessey vs.…

In about the 75 years following the Tulsa Race Riot, there has been investigation on what has happened in Tulsa on the date May 31 and June 1, 1921. The Tulsa Race Riot was a devastating event in history where many had lost their lives, around 300 with recent investigations, and the Greenwood District of Tulsa was destroyed. The riot started over a racial dispute, involving a group of black men trying to prevent a lynching of another black man after he was arrested, that escalated in the worst way leaving over a thousand homeless. The Crisis In Ferguson

I chose Cartoon 8, and I think that the cartoonist’s message is referring back to Martin Luther King Jr’s “I Have A Dream” speech that he called to end racism in the United States. In the cartoon, there is a police officer that is shooting a MLK statue that reads “I HAVE A DREAM”. In the Ferguson case, there are claims that indictment that the white police officer that shot the black male citizen was because the male was black, so that was why the police officer walked out free. The cartoon shows that America is doing the complete opposite of what MLK dreamed of. MLK dreamed of being a country of everyone being equal, no matter if you were black or white. In the Ferguson Crisis, it’s almost hurting to see that these types of things get so out of hand with racism. That was not what MLK fought for in the American Civil Rights Movement. I think that the intended audience is those who were activists in civil rights so that they could see how naïve some people have turned because of this Ferguson case. I do agree with the intended audience because it letting those people see what has been happening in the country but I also can disagree because maybe those people are too shocked to even want to know what the country has turned into.…

These photos show how dangerous it was to be an African American trying to become something during Jim Crow America. If you wanted to be anything more then a free slave you would be hunted down by the Ku Klux Klan and lynched. Although it was against the law, it seemed to have become socially acceptable because people were sending these pictures as postcards. Also, hangings were a spectacle. In many of the photos large groups of people crowed around to watch and stare at the bodies. These events were so open and public that even little girls attended them as seen in one of the photos. Most people that were in the pictures in the background and posing were whites. Even though while performing a lynching most people were masked, no one wore masks while going to look at one. This is because it was against the law and the people who preformed the lynchings didn’t want to be recognized since most of them were upstanding members of society, even police officers. It was not however, a bad thing to go see the aftermath of the lynching. This was because it was something many people were proud of. The notes on the postcards shoed that people were proud of this and that they wanted it to be seen. It is also seen in the pictures that not only were they hanged but burned, shot, and beaten. All of this shows how dangerous it was to be a minority, specifically African American during this time period when it wasn’t even safe to go to the police for…

It's been 24 years since the Rodney King riots of 1992. The same riot that claimed many cars, houses, buildings and stores that people hold dear to them that were turned into ash and ruble. All caused by one police beating of Rodney G. King that was caught on camera that sparked racial injustices throughout the African American community that increases their anger and resentment more. However, on April 29, 1992 when the two cops that were responsible for the beating were placed as not guilty for what they did, it sparked chaos two hour later. The first violent act that was made at Florence and Normandie when people were throwing beer cans and bottles at moving cars out of anger, but they backed off. Although they backed off, a few hour after…

PB’s American Experience has impacted the view of racism towards blacks immensely. This event was a very prominent turning point in American history. The Scottsboro boys case has been one of the largest cases involving a black man (men) and a white women in the case of rape. This event has affected how people are judged now including taking age into consideration, not getting the facts correct, and the fact that black’s used to be very unfairly treated just because of the color of their skin. Laws, punishments, and law enforcement have changed very much since the 1930’s. Much of the racism has gone down, but it has also turned into other types of racism. Truly, the Scottsboro boys case has impacted American History in a very large way. Many…

    Racism in Hampton Roads

As a resident of Langley Air Force Base, we have been living in Hampton Virginia for just over two years now. This area of VA is predominately black, and while I am from South Texas and lived with mixed races there, I have never seen racism the way I have here. When I am on base to go shopping we have a lot of retired military people and they are always pleasant and smiling and telling you to have a nice day. Off base is a different story, people are rude, give you dirty looks and basically look at me the white girl, like what are you doing here. We live in base housing so we have people of all races and nationalities living here, for the most part everyone gets along with everyone. Sure there are people here who look like me and then there are people who do not. I have to sit back and realize that not everyone comes from the same type of family background and morals that I do. I grew up in a loving home where everyone was raised to respect and treat others the same way that they wanted to be treated. When shopping on base at our commissary I have seen people of different nationalities that do tend to keep to themselves, it is mostly the baggers that I notice do that, but they do not do it in a way that they are being rude. But then there are times when I have been in the nail salon to get my nails done and the Vietnamese people start talking to each other and I have no clue what they are saying and that I do find rude sometime, but the one salon I go to I have been going to for over two years now and do not feel that way anymore. Its like my mom always told me when I was a kid telling someone a secret with a third person in the room is rude, and that is how I feel when people carry on a conversation in a different language, while I am sure they are not talking about me I still find it rude.…

    Atlanta Race Riot

“A city lay in travail, God our Lord, and from her loins sprang twin Murder and Black Hate. Red was the midnight; clang, crack and cry of death and fury filled the air and trembled underneath the stars when church spires pointed silently to Thee. And all this was to sate the greed of greedy men who hide behind the veil of vengeance” (Primary Source 20, line 20). The Atlanta Race Riot occurred in 1906 in Atlanta, Georgia. Many innocent African Americans were murdered by hostile mobs of white men. Racism and hatred towards African Americans had been around long before the Atlanta Race Riot, but previously built tensions of jealousy, hostilities, abuse of blacks and whites eventually lead to this event. Booker T. Washington, W.E.B. Dubois, and many other African American and white leaders tried to gain respect from whites for the black community and earn equality, but the majority of whites were not willing to cooperate. The main influences of the Atlanta Race Riot of 1906 were poor whites and the “sexual assaults” they accused blacks of, politics, and media releases.…

Various events have shaped the course of history to date, advocating for civil rights, freedom, and equality. Most of them were led by groups such as the civil rights movement while others were impacted by single individuals. Even though I wasn’t alive during that time, an event that I would want to witness is the ‘I have a dream speech’ delivered by Martin Luther King. If I was asked to choose an event that I would like to witness, I would choose the speech delivered by Martin Luther King Jr. on the 28th of August, 1963. Racism is not just an issue in America; it is a factor that affects the entire world. A white person in any African country will be treated differently, just as any African who is in a country inhabited by White people,…

In recent years, one prime example is the death of James Byrd, Jr., who on June 7, 1998, was found dead in a secluded area in the woods in Jasper, Texas. The murderers were later revealed as three white males who were involved with a white supremacist organization. These men also had tattoos symbolizing their beliefs in white supremacy. The white men chained Byrd to the back of their pickup truck and dragged his body along a rough dirt road. When his body was found, his head and right arm were missing. Within a week of this incident, two copycat crimes occurred. On June 12th, in Belleville, Illinois, three white youths called a black teenager over to a sport utility vehicle grabbed him and dragged him alongside the vehicle. The victim stated that the assailants attempted to pull out his eye while they shouted racial slurs at him. Then on June 14th, in Slidell, Louisiana, a Black man reported that three white men dragged him beside a car for two blocks as they scorned him with racial slurs (Walker, 1994 p. 33). These are examples of hate crimes that are committed against African Americans because the perpetrators believed that they are infesting American society and want to get rid of them so they can cleanse…

    Hate Crimes in America

    • 858 Words

How serious should the threat of a hate crime be taken? According to Ellis Cose, the African American author of Ignore the Noose Makers, to pay too much attention to the idiocy of those who hang nooses simply to intimidate their black target, “is to grant them an importance they do not deserve.” Nooses have a horrific history associated with them. They are known to be used in lynching (punishing people for crimes by private citizens without trial, whether they are guilty or not), of which three quarters of the cases in American history were against blacks. George Curry, another African American author of Calling Nooses What They Are – Terrorism, feels strongly that these threats are not to be taken lightly, and with that attitude people will not be able to “bridge the racial divide.” The American people are protected from hate crimes and verbal threats, and the hanging of a noose is a threat in itself of which their victims deserve protection from.…
