Violet's Ethos Case Study

As Violet is experiencing poverty, there is a list of barriers that prevent Violet from escaping poverty. Violet does not have a job, therefore she does not receive any income. Her education skills are poor, equivalent to a grade 4 child’s level. As Violet may not have a home, her health status is poor. However, these barriers may have a solution. Since Violet’s education level is low, she could consider being part of YOS. YOS is a part of the Salvation Army Youth Outreach Service, they operate education and accommodation for young people. Yet, Violet may not have the access or knowledge of knowing how to be a part of a group organisation. Staying with YOS may be a short-term solution. After reaching the standard education level Violet needs,
she may want to find a job herself and start supporting herself on her own. Being part of the YOS group, this lets Violet’s health to improve by having the proper facilities as well as her education level. Increasing Violet’s chance to be outside of poverty, Violet should gain a Medicare card and an ID to allow herself to obtain prescriptions. This would be a long-term solution, throughout her whole life she can access any prescriptions when she’s sick. As Violet may stay with YOS, her skills would have improved so this allows Violet to acquire a part-time or full-time job in an occupation with her skill level only. When Violet’s fully confident about being out by herself, she would be able to care for herself with the proper education level she gained. The Catholic Social Teaching ‘Preferential option for the poor’ states that “We live in an amazing world with enough resources for everyone. Yet, many miss out”. Violet is one that misses out, so allowing the proper education and health status Violet deserves from YOS. Means that YOS would be following the Catholic Social Teaching. Overall, YOS would be a perfect place to start Violet’s life together.
