Throughout Under the Feet of Jesus by Helena Viramontes, the struggles of Estrella and her family have a sobering effect, demonstrating the hardships that migrant workers endure. Near the end of the novel, when Alejo was takin to the clinic and tended to by a nurse, Estrella has an epiphany, a defining moment. “Estrella had figured it out: the nurse owed them as much as they owed her." This revelation is in my opinion one of the most important aspects of the book.…

    Mary Pleasant, a Biography

Mary Pleasant, also widely referred to as “Mammy Pleasant”, is the considered Mother of Civil Rights in California due to her work with the Civil Rights movement during the 1860s. She was an icon during the Gold Rush and Gilded Age San Francisco because of her political power, mainly due to her large fortune and as well as her influence, in the cause and in her fellow citizens. Her achievements as an abolitionist went unmatched until the late 1960s, during which other laws regarding slavery were passed; although her achievements were surpassed, it was her work that helped set off the chain reaction of events that led to the greater triumphs of the Civil Rights movement. Following the Civil War, Pleasant brought her battles to the courts in the 1860s, and claimed a handful of human rights victories. One of those victories, Pleasant vs. North Beach & Mission Railroad Company, was heavily cited and advocated in the 1980s, which is the main reason behind why Pleasant is known today as “The Mother of Human Rights in California”. Pleasant was a woman of half African descent. She helped shape early San Francisco and furthered the Civil Rights movements. Her ability to “love across boundaries of race and class without losing sight of her goal –the equality for herself and her people” is what makes Pleasant the person that she was, and is what makes of her what people see her for today, as The Mother of Human Rights in California. (Pleasant’s Story)…

The Church of the Later-day Saints was founded by Joseph Smith on April 6, 1830. Joseph was born 23 December 1805 in America. In 1820 when he was 14 years old Joseph was concerned that all churches claimed to be the true church. He prayed for guidance and saw God and Jesus in a vision. They told him not to join any existing church as the original church would be restored to the earth. Later in 1823 Joseph had another vision of an angel called Moroni who showed him religious history inscribed on golden plates. These inscriptions told the teachings of an ancient American civilisation. Joseph Smith used these inscriptions to write the ‘the Book of Mormon’. In 1830 Joseph established the ‘Church of Christ’ and after a revelation he…

Saint Agnes of Rome was born in Rome on January 28, 292. Many young men wanted to marry Saint Agnes, but she turned them all down because she was saving herself for Jesus. One of the men she turned down had a very powerful father and this man was upset with her for refusing him. Saint Agnes was then thrown into a brothel, she was unscathed. The son was the only person who attempted to violate her and he was immediately struck down blind. Saint Agnes then prayed for him to be healed. The powerful father then sent someone to kill Saint Agnes by using a fire. She came out unscathed. He then killed her with a sword in 304, she was twelve years old. In the winter of 1977, a tragedy was painfully and painstakingly unfurled in the Monroe County, New York courtroom of Judge Hyman Maas. Eleven months earlier, on April 27, 1976, a Roman Catholic nun and school teacher, Sister Maureen Murphy, surreptitiously gave birth to a baby boy at the Our Lady of Lourdes parish convent in Brighton, just outside Rochester. It was alleged that she then shoved a pair of panties into the infant’s mouth, asphyxiating him, and left his remains in a wastebasket.…

To begin, Mary appears to be an individual who stopped the search for new experiences to enrich her life and ideas of the world, and therefore feels life has become dull and joyless. Mary is experiencing metapathologies, or the deficiency of adequate meaning in her life (Frager & Fadiman, 2013, pp.304). When did Christianity truly begin? The answer to this question is often thought to be the day that Jesus Christ was born. The fact of the matter is that Christianity essentially began the day the Blessed Virgin Mary was born. This young woman was the first human being to be born without original sin. She was chosen to be the vessel that linked the two Covenants. Without Mary, a messiah would not have been born. It would be impossible to imagine a sacred history without her. She became the criterion against which new theological conceptions must be measured. Mary 's significance is of utmost value when assessing feminist theology, which puts forward demands for fundamental changes in religious life. “She is in a way, a ‘microhistory of salvation’, since God’s ways converge in her, and again in the exemplary response to God’s economy of salvation can be found” (Haffner 4). Without her there would be no Christianity.…
