Eating disorders are real medical illnesses that affect millions of people in the United States. Some of these disorders are anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge-eating disorder. These disorders can affect both genders at any age but typically are seen during teenage years or young adulthood. I chose to do my visual argument on eating disorders because my mom has suffered with one for years, and it has affected her life along with our family and friends who feel hopeless in getting her help.

I changed it to black and white to portray how the woman was feeling based on her facial expression and the circumstances she is in. Black and white makes the photo darker and more depressing. The only other color you will see in the visual argument is red, to me, red stands out the most against the colors black and white. Whenever you are looking at the photo you are immediately drawn to reading the caption at the bottom right corner. The reason for this is because of the contrast off of the background and the font change when using the word “dead”. I chose to make this word stand out because anorexia nervosa has the highest death rate of any psychiatric illness.
How it appeals to logos, ethos, and pathos:
• LOGOS: In the text box at the bottom of the visual argument a fact is stated, “Most deadly symptom of Eating Disorders? Silence.” In the photo you see how sick the woman looking into the mirror looks compared to her reflection. If she is seeing herself to be overweight compared to the reality that she is sickly skinny, there may not be a chance that she will realize that and will starve herself to death. From the ad you are able to conclude that this sickness can and will kill you if you do not seek help for yourself or others.
• ETHOS: Credibility is established whenever the website for the National Eating Disorders Association is used at the end. On the website you are able to read about each eating disorder and how deadly they can
