Vocabulary Studies For Social Studies for ELL Students
When looking at an upcoming Social Studies unit and the vocabulary that might be challenging for my ELL students, I chose our unit on Martin Luther King Jr. This holiday is not focused on as much as Thanksgiving and Christmas, and students seem to be much more familiar with these holidays because of the focus on family and holiday rituals. They hear the terms more often used with Thanksgiving and Christmas. While at the beginning of the school year we do discuss being respectful, truthful, and showing self-control, it is based more towards following the rules at school. We can focus more on the meanings and go more in depth when completing our unit on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is the perfect holiday to discuss how people should be treated in our society and it begins with the teaching of young students in kindergarten. However, they need to understand the terminology used. They witness things on television and do not understand the whole concept because the words and meanings are unfamiliar to them. When teaching both of these units, I always begin with technology. I have the students watch Brain Pop Jr. This introduces vocabulary on their level. Depending on time, this may be the only thing I do the first day. I may also complete a KWL Chart just using 1 word comments. What word do you think of when I say Martin Luther King Jr.? Think about the video you just watched.
The next day, we will review the terms respect, being truthful, and showing self-control because these are words we may talk about on a daily basis. I will do this through a story or even role playing. I think words like civil rights and violence might be too challenging and too hard for them to understand. I believe that these words, acceptance (patience and respect), leadership (courage, bravery, heroism), peace (friendship and forgiveness), and generosity (helpful, friendship, respectful) would be more appropriate for younger students to

Everyone that has been through the American school system within the past 20 years knows exactly who Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is, and exactly what he did to help shape the United States to what it is today. In the beginning of the book, Martin Luther King Jr. Apostle of Militant Nonviolence, by James A. Colaiaco, he states that “this book is not a biography of King, [but] a study of King’s contribution to the black freedom struggle through an analysis and assessment of his nonviolent protest campaigns” (2). Colaiaco discusses the successful protests, rallies, and marches that King put together. . Many students generally only learn of Dr. King’s success, and rarely ever of his failures, but Colaiaco shows of the failures of Dr. King once he started moving farther North.…

Doctor Martin Luther King Junior's legacy is one that I could only aspire to stand next to. His preachings gave the power to those disenfranchised to love, tolerate, and care, therefore bringing change to not only those who sought hatred, ignorance, and fear, but to those who were never offered these unalienable human rights. This message of warmth was the backbone of his unquestionably revolutionary movement, creating widespread, lasting change throughout the entire United States. “Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into a friend” (Martin Luther King, Jr. Christmas Speech, Dec. 25, 1957).…

During all of Martin Luther King’s marches, boycotts, and protests he has broken what it is today called the Segregation Law. Once King was at Birmingham his main intent was to provoke mass arrest so that they could create a big crisis and open the city to a negotiation. King protested around the city affecting the social security community of the people that lived in Birmingham. To get social media attention towards the police, King used several young children to help out in the protest. It is unfair and unjust to use small children in front of the adult protestants, putting them in jeopardy of their safety of these poor innocent children. He also encouraged kids from elementary school, high school, and college to not go to school so they could take part in the demonstrations, that day when they didn't go to school was named D day and later called the Childrens Crusade. King is responsible for this wrong and unforgiving decision for the only intention to get the attention from the media.…

Day (officially Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.) is an American federal holiday marking the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. It is observed on the third Monday of January each year, which is around the time of King's birthday, January 15. King was the chief spokesman for nonviolent activism in the civil rights movement, which successfully protested racial discrimination in federal and state law. The campaign for a federal holiday in King's honor began soon after his assassination in 1968. President Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law on November 2, 1983, and it was first observed three years later. Wyoming was the first state to observe it in 1990 while some states resisted observing the holiday as such, giving it alternative names or combining it with other holidays. Arizona originally rescinded Martin Luther King Day, setting off a massive boycott in the state in 1987 until state voting return the holiday in 1992. It was officially observed in all 50 states for the first time in 2000 when South Carolina recognized it as a…

Being a military brat I was raised around all different kinds of race, religion, cultures, and so on. I know what it is like to be that one with different views and values. Relating to students is really important to me because I want them to always feel safe and comfortable in my classroom. Multicultural education is education that teaches the value of cultural diversity (Slavin, 2012). There are five dimensions that fall under multicultural education, which are content integration, knowledge construction, prejudice reduction, empowering school culture. These five dimensions are different strategies to implement diversity in the classroom, and using culture examples in our content area. I have learned many things through the five dimensions of multicultural education and will implement it in my classroom. In one of my journal entries I stated “I am really glad that I read up on this and now I can bring this to the table at our first meeting on Thursday “(entry 3). Reading all of this information I was able to bring information to our group meeting, and everyone was very grateful for the information. We have been working on a plan to implement throughout all of the classes, in our “6th Grade…

The reason why is because waking up that Monday, although I knew the historical value of it, I did not know how it impacted my family. After arriving to her house and catching up on what we had done that weekend, she began to talk about why Martin Luther King Day was significant to her. My grandmother attended his march in 1963. She told me what it was like to experience King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, claiming it was the most profound speech she had ever witnessed. As well as the experience of standing with the thousands of people at the Lincoln Memorial protesting to progress the Civil Rights Movement. She described to me what it was like growing up in an era of discrimination, where my family was considered different due to our mixed…
