Vodafone History
Vodafone is one of the largest international cellular carriers in the world. They are also one of the best. They were formed in 1984 as a subsidiary of Racal Electronics Plc. Racal Electronics Plc, went public in October 1988. Vodafone separated from Racal Electronics Plc and became an independent company in September 1991, at which time it changed its name to Vodafone Group Plc. Vodafone has dedicated itself to international phone service.
Vodafone merged with AirTouch Communications, Inc. a USA company based in Pacific Bell, and changed its name to Vodafone AirTouch Plc. Later they reverted to its former name, Vodafone Group Plc, on 28 July 2000. A short history of the Vodafone company is as follows;
Vodafone purchases a majority stake in Ghana Telecom. Vodafone offers the M-Paisa mobile money transfer service on Afghanistan's Roshan. Afghanistan is now serviced by the Vodafone international calling network. The Vodafone Group is awarded the second mobile phone license in Qatar, expanding its cellular international reach. Vodafone adds Tele2 Italia SpA and Tele2 Telecommunication Services SLU from Tele2 AB Group. As well, the Hutch Essar from Hutchison Telecommunications International Limited network is also integrated.
Further, Safaricom, Vodafone’s partner in Kenya announces the opening of M-PESA, an innovative new mobile payment solution that gives customers access to simple financial transactions by cellular phone. Vodafone joins Microsoft and Yahoo! in seamless Instant Messaging (IM) services to the international phone. These services provide service to both the PC and cellphones.
Soon after, Vodafone signs a group of powerful agreements which will lead to the mobilization of the internet. Shortly after this agreement, YouTube agrees to offer Vodafone customers specially rendered YouTube pages on their cellphones. Finally Vodafone creates agreements with Google Maps, eBay, and MySpace.com. Vodafone now reaches over 200 million customers. The
