Introduction: Basic Geology of Volcanoes
A volcano can be a mountain like structure or a wide sloping hill that opens downwards to a pool of molten rock below the surface of the earth. When a break in the earth’s surface allows molten rock material to come up from the earth’s core, a volcano is formed. Volcanic eruptions can cause lateral blasts, lava flows, hot ash flows, mudslides, avalanches, falling ash and floods. These eruptions can also trigger tsunamis, flash floods, earthquakes, mudflows and rock falls. Examples of volcanic mountains are Mount St. Helens, Mount Fuji, and Pinatubo. (Kusky, 2010).
The earth’s crust is made up of huge slabs known as plates. Plates fit together like a jigsaw puzzle and float on the mantle. They are in constant motion, either towards each other or away from each other. Plate tectonics is considered to be the main theory currently used by most Earth Scientists to describe motion within the outer-most layer of the sold Earth, which is also known as the lithosphere. It is this movement that induces friction that causes earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Volcanism is associated with two of the plate boundary types, divergent and convergent margins. Volcanoes are formed when two tectonic plates meet; the heavier plate slides underneath the light plate and melts down to become magma. This mixes with trapped gases and steam in the magma chamber (Gates, 2009). Pressure from surrounding rocks forces the magma to the surface through weak points, such as fractures and when it reaches the crust an explosion occurs with regard to the amount of pressure available and the viscosity of magma creating a subduction volcano. Volcanoes can additionally be formed when two tectonic plates move away from each other. The impact of the divergence of these plates leads to the melting of rocks in the mantle that melt from beneath the earth’s upper mantle and find

    Plate tectonic theory is a widely excepted theory that the Earth’s lithosphere is made up of plates, both oceanic and continental, which slowly move due to convection currents in the mantle and the asthenosphere. However, it is very hard to be certain as we can’t see the structure of the Earth, so some people do not agree with it. This theory saw the introduction of what we know today to be tectonic plates. Tectonic plates occur where there is radioactive decay in the core and temperatures are extremely high. This decay can occur anywhere in the earth’s core. This results in a plume of magma rising through the mantle creating a thermal current. When this current reaches the surface it spreads through the asthenosphere, before cooling and sinking. These are the convection currents which move tectonic plates. Convection currents will only occur in liquid form and in warm conditions. Tectonic plate theory has evidence to prove that these currents do take place. We know that the mantle is liquid and has high temperatures as magma that originates in the mantle is molten. This means that convection currents can occur. This part of plate tectonic theory is supported by global seismic activity because if convection current did not exist and plates were not able to move, earthquakes would not occur at any plate boundaries, but particularly at collision plate boundaries as there would be no plate movement.…

    Volcanoes are formed on land near coastal areas when a continental plate and an oceanic plate converge.     Firstly, one place where tectonic activity occurs is at oceanic to oceanic constructive plate boundaries. Here two plates diverge or move away from each other, pushed apart by huge convection currents In the earth’s mantle. There are transform faults at right angles to the ridge. The movement of these faults causes rift valleys to occur. The MIR is the result of the North American plate and Eurasian plate diverging in the middle of the Atlantic ocean. Here, volcanic islands such as Iceland, the Canary islands and ascension island have been created by the rising magma from the mantle. The GARV is an example of where the crust has dropped down between parallel faults to form rift valleys. As the crust subducts into the mantle it melts causing igneous activity below, magma to rise and therefore volcanoes erupt on the surface as a result.
