I have had experience volunteering with the Urdd, supervising groups of primary school children at Glan-Llyn; where another member of staff and I were responsible for a group of children while they took part in various activities. Each Tuesday morning for the last year, I have volunteered at Ysgol Gynradd Cemaes at the Infants' department, where I helped the children with their work and spent time with small groups of children on specific tasks. During my time volunteering at Ysgol Gynradd Cemaes, I also spent time with pupils who suffered from learning difficulties, and this helped me to see how certain tasks have to be adapted in order for pupils of varying abilities to succeed. I have also played a large part in the process of transferring pupils in my school's catchment area from primary school to secondary school, by volunteering as a Year Twelve buddy, providing a point of contact at the school for the pupils if they felt in any way uneasy or upset. I was also part of a group of Year Twelve students who ran an arts club for pupils from years 3-9 where primary school children were introduced to the school and some of its current pupils and students through a series of arts and performance workshops. Through…

Hunger has always been a serious issue and still is today. Many people experience food insecurity and feel shameful when going to food pantries or seeking assistance. We can reduce the negative stigma associated with food pantries in numerous ways. First spreading awareness of the need for food pantries will help change the stigma as people realize that the need is real. Then educating the public on the number of people in need of the food pantries because of their struggle with food insecurity will show how prevalent the need has become. Most of all volunteering in food pantries is a firsthand way to get involved and reduce the negative feeling associated with the need for assistance. These few things will be a great start in reducing the…

Through this organization, I was given the opportunity to lead by way of volunteerism and school involvement, participating in over twenty-five hours of community service. I was able to work with organizations like Feed the Children, packaging and loading boxes with supplies for Sandy Hurricane Relief workers, as well as Kaboom, NIKE, and the Absentee Shawnee Tribe in a community playground build for Little Axe youth. I also worked to pick up trash around my neighborhood on two occasions, completing a total of ten hours of community service. At school I emptied recycle boxes of teachers at least once every two weeks and worked in NHS sponsored events like our annual Pi…

However, according to Sally Brown, volunteering brings these groups together and unites communities through bonding and “mutual understanding” (qtd. in Dykhuis 16). In fact, Pappas states that many youth volunteers get started in service work through church or school. Consequently, these closely knit programs encourage friendship and address areas of each community’s concern (Dykhuis 16). This allows communities to come together through a similar cause whether that be “illiteracy, teen pregnancy, high crime rates, or drug abuse” (Spiegel and Safrit 14). Due to the different opportunities for community service, volunteers are able to understand the barriers between affluent and limited resource areas and use their knowledge of these barriers for further personal and communal…

Throughout my fall semester I volunteered at City Team: San Jose. It is located off Old Bayshore High way. They have multiple missions, which are to feed the homeless and influence people’s lives in a positive way. The City Team in San Jose is a men’s shelter, a recovery program for men who have experienced addiction. This process is about 9 to 12 months, and comes with clothing, counseling, meals, a place to live in, Bible studies, career employment services, and education classes. Volunteering is something that can happen at all ages and each different age group has something that is important to offer when they volunteer. In volunteering the different age groups are broken down into five distinct generation cohorts (Connors, 2012). By breaking down the different ages into these generational cohorts it allows those working with the volunteers the opportunity to recognize the different strengths and characteristics that the different ages bring with them to the volunteer opportunity. The five different generational cohorts include the Greatest Generation or those that were born prior to 1926, the Traditionals or Silent Generation those that were born between 1926 and 1945, the Baby Boomers those that were born between…

I am spending my time volunteering at St. Marks United Methodist Church (St. Marks UMC). This church is an open community, working to create a comfortable atmosphere for anyone and everyone in and around the area. I work specifically with the youth of the church and I reach out to students who are my age or younger than me. I have been volunteering at St. Marks for almost four years, assisting in many different groups and organizations sponsored by our church. I volunteer at this church because it has given me an opportunity to be myself, explore talents, and make strong connections, and I want to help continue this effort and reach out to kids who are struggling with a lot of the same difficulties I faced. I believe that volunteering here is a great experience for someone studying psychology because you meet and get to know many kids who are facing various issues in their lives.…

Tuesday, December the eighth, I had my first experience volunteering. As an active member of Webster County High School’s Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) club, I decided that I would leave archery practice a few minutes early and head towards the Providence Food Bank. Every second Tuesday of each month, HOSA meets at the food bank at five-thirty to help prepare senior citizen boxes and assist people in shopping at the food bank. Intrigued by the opportunity to gain a few bonus points and support the club that I am passionate about, I figured why not give it a…
