Being active in National Charity League for six years, I have had the pleasure of working with many different philanthropies, my favorite being The Tualatin School House Pantry. Operating out of the basement of a church, the food bank helps to feed families in the community who are struggling financially. While my first few experiences at the food pantry were emotionally challenging, I found them to be very eye opening. I met many people from different backgrounds, yet they all shared the same hardship, the inability to afford food for themselves and their families. Wanting to do more for the recipients, I received training to be one of the personal shoppers.…

Giving (verb): to freely transfer the possession of (something) to (someone); hand over to. When one gives to someone or does something special for someone, it is a win-win situation. In fact, the feeling of happiness is always mutual in those cases. No matter how big, small, concrete, or abstract the act of kindness is, it will go a long way nevertheless. The winter season - that is, the season for giving - is approaching, and it is a great time to “kick off” the amiable gestures for family and friends now. For me, personally, I would like to help cook a tasty dessert for my family to marvel over.…

In the short story “When Handouts Keep Coming The Food Line Never Ends” written by Mark Winnie, is about domestic hunger never coming to an end.Winne has worked in food banking for twenty-five years. He is also the co-founder of a food bank in Connecticut. He explains how people would be lined up waiting for food bank trucks to arrive, so they can get pre-prepared bags of food. He goes on to explain how the lines get longer each time as more food was brought in. He argues that feeding the hungry will never stop people from being hungry. But instead, enables them to keep using food banks rather than actually getting help or seeking assistance to help support themselves. He talks about how the Reagan campaign made cutbacks for federal support for social welfare programs which caused food demand to rise. This caused food banks to have to search for food sources. Food banks started accepting all food donations whether edible or non-edible, and the number of volunteers multiplied in order to sort through the good and bad. He also talks about how the volunteers kept coming back because they believe they're doing good by feeding the hungry, and how everyone loves feeling good. He also talks about how some food banks don't even see if the recipients really need food, and how they just give food out to anyone in line. In conclusion, he states that we all know that poverty is the cause of hunger and to solve this problem we need to end poverty.…

As UDFB stated, “Our mission is to provide individuals and families who are in need with food and access to a network of community resources that help them achieve self-sufficiency”, we can classify their mission into short term (in order to solve the hunger issue) and long term (assist people to achieve self-sufficiency). Food bank is the place to distribute food to the need people in order to avoid any needless wastes. Despite UDFB have accomplished their short-term mission, their long-term mission is failed because they don’t provide any support to help the food insecure people become self-sufficient. UDFB should build up more strong relationship with other charity organizations and government institutions. In order to compensate what they miss, UDFB isplanning a new food bank, cooperating with Seattle library, youth care, and low-income housing institute, generate an integrated big picture that connect people to the needed resources include the food and community…

Working with the public relations firm, Mitchell Communications Group, Inc., Tyson Foods "wanted to develop a more strategic overall approach to hunger relief that would engage stakeholders on a more meaningful level including: Tyson team members; community leaders and elected officials; retail and food service customers; and a larger number of organizations and individuals involved in a hunger relief nationwide." Together, they created three primary goals focusing on approach, communication, and involvement towards hunger relief. Tyson Foods and Mitchell Communications Group used primary and secondary research techniques to identify nonprofit hunger relief organizations in America, competitors ' approaches to hunger relief, as well as issues related to key stakeholders in the company. They used their findings to fashion a plan focusing on four areas: strategies, target audiences, objectives, and budget. Execution of the plans, which included new partnerships with four hunger relief organizations (America 's Second Harvest, Share Our Strength, Lift Up America, and Feed the Children), resulted in Tyson Foods donating 7.5 million pounds of protein and staged 68 major food donation events from fall 2005 to the end of 2006. MCG came up with an evaluation by surveying food bank directors, tracking and analyzing media coverage and exposure, assessing team member involvement, and by comparing actual results with initial goals. This campaign was found to be highly effective in retrieving positive results in each of these areas.…

Imagine you’re walking down the sidewalks of Wilmington. You see cars and buses driving by along with adults and children. You notice that there is a little girl, looking rather malnourished, holding a plastic bag full of canned vegetables, peaches, and juice. As she walks by, a paper flutters out of the bag. You pick it up and realize that it’s a flyer for the Food Bank of Delaware. The paper says that they are in need of volunteers to help package food for people in Delaware. You ask yourself, “If I volunteered, could I make a change?” The answer is yes. The Food Bank of Delaware needs volunteers to help package food for people who cannot obtain it. Some may go without food, but with the help of volunteers at the Food Bank of Delaware, more people will have the chance to get the food they need.…

Increasing the awareness of the food insecurities that create the need for food pantries will, in turn, lessen the stigma surrounding them. Knowing that the need for assistance with food securities is a common problem shared by a large part of our population will help them to not feel alone in their struggle and increase the likely hood that they will seek the help of the food pantries. Volunteering at a food pantry makes it possible to personally help relieve the stigma, making those in need feel comfortable knowing that people care and there is help available. Reducing the unneeded shame associated with the need for food will help more people be willing to utilize the food banks to meet their dietary…

The Food Bank was the perfect place to offer our services and it was an honor to participate with my fellow peers on this particular volunteer experience. The staff and volunteers welcomed us with warm, open arms. Due to prior registration through one of our students, those arms were overly outstretched. As a class, we had an opportunity to participate in the packaging of the foods that were being donated to those families in need in the Houston area. It was our job to sort these foods in their designated containers. These containers needed to be separated for items such as canned foods, sweets, bottled drinks, and household items just to name a few. Before the rules of engagement were discussed, the people facilitating the whole movement provided us with general rules we needed to adhere to promote the overall experience. In this beginning, proper instruction was given to all concerning the Do’s and Don’ts of doing such a task. This task required us to be active, and to remain on our feet while adhering to a few rules. Ultimately, they wanted to make sure the process would be a smooth one. There were tons of boxes in the back, where we had to go and retrieve them, separating the contents in the bins. After the bins were filled up to the top, we now transferred them to on movable shelves that stacked bins into the back. This process ran smoothly and we had no problems assisting others. As time progressed, we had opportunities to get to know some of the participants when we stopped for lunch. Many of the volunteers who partook in this experience showed the same amount of willingness to help the community as the University of Houston-Victoria students. We all worked as a team and had a great time doing it.…

They have seven programs that simultaneously educate the community about the hunger problem in Georgia, and they also make sure that people throughout Atlanta are being fed. These seven programs include Atlanta Prosperity Campaign, Atlanta’s Table, Community Gardens, Hunger 101, Hunger Walk/Run, Kids In Need and Product Rescue Center. I had the opportunity to participate in two of their programs, which were the Hunger 101 program and the Product Rescue Center. I was first introduced to this organization by volunteering for their Hunger 101 program. This program was very enlightening, and it inspired me to make a difference in my community. This program entailed an interactive group session that educated the volunteers about the hunger problem in Georgia. The volunteers participated in a workshop where we were given the role of being a less fortunate person for a day. We were given this person’s income, how many people lived their house, and all the expenses that they had to pay for. We had to use those values to calculate how much money that person has to spend on food per day. I discovered that most of these people had no more than three dollars to spend on food for their whole family in one day.…

I have been involved with Girl Scouts for 8 years and through that experience, community service and many hours spent volunteering have become very meaningful to my life as well as taught me many things that I will use throughout my life. I have volunteered countless hours, but out of all of the work I have done, my Girl Scout awareness project has had the greatest impact not only on the community, but on myself as well. For my project, I had hoped to bring reckless and drunk driving awareness to the community to help out the parents who have lost children themselves to this issue, and to show teens that getting behind the wheel intoxicated can be extremely hazardous. Being a teenager myself and witnessing fellow classmates pass away due to this issue, it breaks my heart to know that the cause of their death was a couple of alcoholic beverages. My project was to show students the risk of their decisions.…
