Voyage Of Life Thomas Cole
Thomas Cole’s piece titled The Voyage of Life: Youth is part of a four-part series that traces the journey of an archetypal hero along the "River of Life." This piece was made in 1842 and is currently located in The National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. The piece is oil on canvas, and it is hanging on the wall with the remaining four stages of human life; childhood, manhood, and old age. Thomas Cole’s oil painting process started with a thin and even application of an additional ground to the already prepared supports in order to harmonize his distinctive color palette. Sometimes he applied the paint quite thinly, but he varied the density of his pigments—they are especially thick in the bright highlights. The final step was to apply a layer of transparent varnish that provided a lustrous …show more content…
As for the light source of this piece the sun has moved from the east (childhood piece) to right above him giving him a glance of a new future. Cole’s color palette leans towards the warmer colors, as it gives a lighter value from the boy to his journey to the palace. Also, the use of dark colors from behind the boy and where the angel stands except, she has an aura of light. I believe his use of contrast between dark and light colors gives variety in the artwork. Continuing with motion, the cool colors, white, and curved lines give the river a flowing feel as the boat floats above. The piece also contains shapes such as the palace, which consists of circles and rectangles. The texture of the painting is more useful with the fluffy clouds in the blue background. While the pattern is associated with the greenery and the symmetrical balance of columns in the palace. I think the chance in this piece is the angel just because she’s sort of in the background as if she’s not needed anymore and the most emphasized than the palace (which most would

The variation of colors he used created an outstanding display of nature that I never thought possible. I believe his purpose was to create imagery, an illusion to the audience, as if they were looking into the American West, through his painting. The entity of light was the key element of this painting. The form of a fine white line amid a mass of water allowed the separation of the earth and the heavens. What is intriguing about the painting is that as quickly as the earth and heaves were separated, the two joined once again at the same location. The reflection of the lake elaborated on the purity of the water and the richness of life. The contrast of dark and light colors served a great importance in his painting.…

Usually when I flip through my art book I come across many beautiful pieces, but when my eyes landed on Thomas Cole’s painting I was blown away. The first thing I did when I came across it was touch the paper because you would believe that you can feel the leaves by the way they are painted, and don’t get me started on the values of green that he used to make the piece one harmonious view of nature. I love everything about this landscape piece because it tells a story and the use of space, line and texture made it seem like it was a realistic scene. Thomas Cole Painted this large piece from sketches that he drew from sitting and observing the looping bend of the Connecticut river from Mount Holyoke.…

Just a little bit off from the middle of the painting there is a structure not unlike Stone Hedge in England on top of a hill. Below it there is a river with small sailing ships going around, and on the bank there is a village filled with lots of wooden structures and even further left you can see a man using oxen to plow a field. On the other side of the painting you can see another section of the river where a larger sailing ship is being constructed on its…

The serene harbour scene in the background serves as a foil for the furious action taking place in the foreground, Other forceful features in the foreground include the size of the shark extending far beyond the boundaries of the picture frame, the movement of the boat towards the boy and the violent thrust of the boat hook. Copley uses variation in line and texture to exaggerate the sensation of the churned up water in the foreground and the still, glassy water in the background. He has also used light and colour to create the effect of an overcast day , there seems to be a beam of light shining on the main focal point ,while the remaining parts…

After reading the First Letter to Luis de Santangel and the Letter to Ferdinand and Isabella regarding the fourth voyage, I have compared the two letters. They seem to be written by different people because of the change of environments. The First Letter to Luis de Santangel was written on February 17, 1493. Ten years later, July 7, 1503, the Letter to Ferdinand and Isabella was composed. Within this ten year gap, so much turmoil was caused by Christopher Columbus's discoveries. His curiosity led him to discover so much of what the world has to offer.…

The use of the light color stands out on the flame which captures my attention. It captures my attention because of the shaded area and the smoke that glows from the fire. The use of the dark color is on the sea and the same as in the sky. It looks like the setting of the painting happened during the night because of the darkness that covered the painting. The artist combines the dark and light color on the huge crowd and on the animals.…

It’s really hard with everyone around me having such a bad attitude. I have been more to myself and not really hanging around people because I don’t want to have their bad attitude.…

After looking over the painting, I notice many formal elements. The formal elements that are presented in this work are: color, line, space, texture, and motion. The painting is very well balanced; therefore, my attention isn’t focused on a certain part of the painting. The texture of the painting looks smooth. The multiple uses of contrasting colors are what I believe attracted my eyes to this painting. I feel that this formal element is what is most dominant in the picture. Another formal element that caught my eye was the use of motion. The endless amount of swirls and wavy lines make the painting look as if it is moving. I think that this gives the work a cool effect when looking at it.…
