Art & Design Criticism
The following is a quote from Barnett Newman, “I know that it is impossible to talk about my work. And since it's impossible for me or anybody else to talk about my work, I feel I might as well talk about it.” An example of his work is “Onement.” There are six topics for art criticism. The first is verbal description, what does the viewer see? Second is formal analysis, what are the elements and principles of art and design present in the work? Third is media and technique analysis, what materials and methods did the artist use? Examples are that Matisse was schooled European painting techniques and he began experimenting with techniques, collage making and architecture. Additional research notes are given regarding painting and drawing media and technique.
Examples of answers are given for the student coinciding with Matisse’s work. The first is medium: oil paint. The second is technique: opaque color applied with brush. The third is substrate: canvas. Fourth is medium: fine brush strokes on a smooth surface. The Fifth is appearance: table cloth and wall paper have a velvety quality. The sixth is how the medium helps the piece: the oil paint produces rich colors that add to the pieces festive nature.

First, Imitationalism suggests that the artist is trying to imitate real life. Second, Formalism suggests the artist tries to experiment with the elements and principles of art. Third, emotionalism suggests the mood or emotion the artist is attempting to convey. Fourth, Functionalism suggests the function the artwork serves like religious or political. Fifth, Feminism suggests the artwork helps support the women’s movement in some way.
An example of realism given is Andrew Wyeth’s “Master Bedroom.” An example of Formalism is Jasper John’s “False Start.” An example of Emotionalism is Edvard Munch’s “The Scream.” An example of Instrumentalism is Keith Herring’s “Untitled” Subway drawing.
