Literature has become culturally diverse from different religions of different races. This has helped its quality and the stories; poems and plays have portrayed history, values, customs, and languages of particular groups. Literature is being multicultural now helps acquire knowledge of different societies in the world. The story Jewish Christmas by Faye Moskowitz, a poem My Papa Waltz by Theodore Roethke and the play Andre’s Mother by Terrence McNally provides for the diversity and the influence of family in literature.
Faye Moskowitz writes about a traditional Jewish Christmas as she was taking up in Michigan in the thirties. The theme of religious tradition is reflected in this piece. She starts by saying “Jewish Christmas-that’s what my gentle friend calls Chanukah.” It indicates how as a young child she understands her religion and knows that those who are not Jewish are gentiles. Her experience of Christmas was miserable because they were the minority and everyone else celebrated it with excitement and delight.
Theodore Roethke writes about a loving relationship between a father and his son in the poem “My Papa Waltz”. Their relation is so close and loving even though the father is alcoholic “the whiskey in your breath could make a boy dizzy.” He hung’s on to the dance with him and they dance through the kitchen making a mess and the son knows his mother will disapprove of it “my mother’s countenance could not inform itself.” The father waltzes his son to bed but he still insists on his shirt and this proves his love for his dad despite his shortcomings.
Andre’s Mother, a play by Terrence McNally tells the story about friends and family morning one of their own. They all stand together holding white balloons and Cal. Andre’s lover has more difficulty releasing the balloon because he had a warm and loving relationship with him. Carl’s dad and his sister have no problem letting their balloon go since they did not be too close to Andre.
