Walgreen came from Dixon, Illinois at the age of sixteen, working an unpleasant job at a drug store after he lost a portion of a finger that left him incapable of continuing a career in athletics. Whereas its competitor CVS Pharmacy chose to expand via aggressive acquisitions of hundreds of smaller companies, in the 2000’s Walgreens decided to instead focus simply on rapid store growth.
