It tells what is happening to get Mark home and how long he has left to live. It fills in any holes in the story and helps you to understand what is happening to the word at that point in time. One thing that was confusing about the story was the time period. It is said that the time period of this story is supposed to be set in 2035 but I don’t believe there was any obvious representation of this. The time period in this story could be present day if not for the fact that they are on Mars. The only informat that is given about time is that it is after the Apollo 11 moon landing. This is shown be Mark bragging that know his is cooler than Neil Armstrong. This shows that the story is not in a alternate universe it is the same world that we live in but it just has not happened yet. In other books like the Hunger Games the time period is shown by the story giving a time line. The book the Hunger Games is said to set in the year 2087. This is shown throughout the story by making references to things the we have in our everyday life and making them seem old and forgotten. This might be because The Martian is set only a couple years…
As the years go by, nature gets unappreciated everyday(Thematic statement topic). Many people don’t really care what happens to the environment all they really care about is electronics. In Ray Bradbury’s short story The Pedestrian it shows how much unappreciate nature (elaborate on thematic statement/context/background). In The Pedestrian the narrator states “ In ten years of walking by night or day, for thousands of miles, he had never met another person walking, not one in all that time”. (Bradbury para.…
Through the story “The Pedestrian”, Ray Bradbury, has chosen to make a statement about the impact of technology on our humanity and the way we think through technology. By putting the reader in Leonard Meads shoes he shows that mankind advanced to the point where society loses its humanity and most people spend their time inside on their viewing screens and walking is considered abnormal. Bradbury gives us a glance into the future which is the main character’s life in the year 2053 to give the readers an idea of how mankind can end up. The author chose the character of Mr. Mead a man who seems to be different to display the humanity of mankind in a society where technology and government decisions have taken over. Mr. Mead goes on walks every…
Everything in life can be related back to a journey - our character and ability to deal with situations will greatly influence the kind of people we will become. By studying the concept of a journey through a variety of texts, it is clear that it is the journey, not the destination that ultimately matters. The texts, Harvie Krumpet a Claymation short film by Adam Elliot, Stefania’s Dancing Slippers by Jennifer Beck and Lindy Fisher, and Tim Winton’s short story, Big World, reoccurring themes emerge with respect to life’s journeys. Among these are that a sojourner may experience lead to self-realisation and personal revelation, and sometimes, maturity.…
She claims that walking is fading due to the fact that many are either too lazy, occupied with other activities such as watching television or have a car. The suburbs are known as fragments; people do not have a choice but to drive their car to the store, work, school, and social events. Solnit also states that walking shows a sign of low status and powerlessness. Because of that, our society has mentally put a maximum distance they can walk. Furthermore, with advancements in technology, children and adults go outdoors less, while realizing that it does not really offer them any interesting adventures or destinations. The author expands on her argument by telling her readers the negative impacts on our mental health; our human perception of what we think of the natural outside world is…
In this book Hayden writes about suburban neighborhoods and how they came to be and were developed. She starts with what she labels “borderlands which takes place in the 1820’s. Hayden then goes onto picturesque enclaves which starts with the 1950’s, then proceeds to streetcar buildouts starting with the year 1870’s. Then moves onto mail-order and self-built suburbs covering the 1900’s and then onto sitcom suburbs starting in the 1940’s. She writes about edge nodes in the 1960’s and lastly rural fringes covering the 1980’s to now.…
36, Louv) defined as “the human costs of alienation from nature” affects more than just the parents of today’s generation. Because of parents being too busy to spend time with their child or let them play outside they just give them an electronic device to pay on thinking that it is a safer alternative to going outside where they could get injured or kidnapped. Unfortunately doing so is stifling the children’s creativity. Not allowing kids to be free to experience nature does a lot of harm, if people, especially children went outdoors more there would be no “Nature-deficit disorder”. Not only does not going outside squelch/REPRESS creativity, but it also causes both physical and mental damage. It is proven in that going outdoors makes people happier and healthier. Such evidence is shown in the South University study where Dr. Susanne Preston a professor at South University says, “being outside and spending time in nature is good for a person’s mental health, as it allows them to de-stress”. The less stress one has the more happy and healthy they are. If today’s youth are taught to go and play outside the same will carry on for their children and generations to come. The world could make monumental improvements if everyone, particularly children were outside more…
Leonard Mead lived in a uncomplicated lifestyle of nightly wonders in the narrative, The Pedestrian, written by Ray Bradbury. Under the circumstance in 1952 with technology on the rise, Mr.Mead is awfully pessimistic with society during his diurnal evening walks; often, he is considered envious, mistakened by society, and happily self-reliant. Constantly, Leonard Mead envies those living in his community due to their lack of interest of reality. During one nightly walk, he makes a mockery of those co-dependant: “‘what is it now?’ He asked the houses noticing his wrist watch. ‘Eight thirty PM? Time for a dozen assorted murders? A quiz? A revue? Comedian falling off stage?’.. In ten years of walking by day or night, for thousand of miles,he…

Bill Bryson’s “A Walk in the Woods” is a book that epitomizes the struggles that one needs to go through in order to better themselves. This is evident with the main characters. They are two middle aged men named Bryson, a man who resideds in New Hampshire and Katz, Bryson’s overweight alcoholic college friend from Iowa. When he thought of someone to accompany him, a grumpy college friend named Katz came to mind. As they started off, Bryson started off with the goal that the trail was only being hiked as a way to see the grand nation of America, but it lead to so much more as it uncovered many important topics. This is true because the trail was filled with adventure in discovering America’s heartland and realizing their own personal problems. Through this, the men conquered many areas of their life that they were not strong in before including fitness, cooperation with others and finally, specifically, Katz addressing his personal issues. Therefore, even though they didn’t complete the entire trail, which was the original goal, they achieved something else that is more important, conquering their personal flaws, thus making this trip a complete, utter success.…

Methods of transportation are often taken for granted. Only when you lose it, do you truly understand its value. “The 21 Mile Walk to Work,” an article by David A. Graham, presents the story of a man, James Robertson, who walks to work every day. This article brings certain political issues to light by using this story as an example for the local government to expand their public transportation services. People like James are forced to walk to work so they can make a living and survive in the city of Detroit, Michigan.…
In both Nazi Germany and the futuristic society in Bradbury’s short story, there are individuals who conformed and those who don’t conform. In America the first amendment was passed to protect our freedom of speech and freedom of religion. Everyone is born with a voice, that could change the world for better or worse. “Conformity is the jailer of freedom and the enemy of growth”- John F. kennedy. People who conform are usually thralled. They’re manipulated into thinking how a nonconformist leader wants them to think. Fear leads to silence and silence leads to deaths. “The world isn’t destroyed by those doing evil but those who watch them without doing anything.” -Albert Einstein. Nonconformist are people who speaks up for the rights they were born with, speaking up for what they believe in.…
This is not an article about a hike covering huge chunks of miles, deep in the wilderness, but rather, this is an article about the contrasts of living in an urban environment, finding solitude in that environment and of the relief that comes from receiving long awaited rain in a drought stricken state…
The overall theme of “The Pedestrian” is that society should be wary of technological use because humans will soon be enslaved to its empty entertainment. The story follows Leonard Mead who does not fit into the futuristic society because he has chosen to live life in the past he loves, going on nightly walks to enjoy the world outside screens. He mocks the people in their dark homes being shadows from television with only the light of screens…
