Walmart's Hourly Associates
In my opinion, Walmart prefer to recruit new store managers from its large pool of hourly associates because, it works out a lot better for Walmart to promote from within the company. By promoting hourly associates, it makes it easier on Walmart because they don’t have to train their higher up employees everything. The people being promoted from within already know the system and how Walmart runs things. Other than that, this is also motivation for Walmart employees to stay at the company, for the chance to move up. The same thing goes for potential employees wanting to work there. If 75% of store managers actually started out as hourly associates, wouldn’t you want to work there too? This is a very good way for Walmart to run their

Megan McArdle, the author of Walmart's Wage Experiment Works... for Workers, compares wage increases with different workforces at Walmart stores. McArdle provides the reader with ideas and questions like, "What happens if different stores did this?" and other questions relating to the effort needed to continue production if Walmart increased or the number of employees needed to fill the new workplaces. Claims like, "Paying higher wages has allowed Walmart to attract better workers, resulting in cleaner, nicer stores." Throughout the article, McArdle compares Costco's way of work with Walmart's and concludes that people living/working in rural(ish) areas generally make less money and have less workers, so "up"ing the wages would help those less…

    Labouring the Walmart Way

2 One of the most frequent complaints about Walmart, which employs 1.4 million people worldwide, is its failure to pay workers a living wage. Store employees are paid 20-30 percent less than the industry average, making many of them eligible for social assistance. It is estimated that American taxpayers fork out $2.5 billion a year in welfare payments to Walmart employees (Head, 2004). Because the retailer hires hard-to-place workers, like recent immigrants, seniors, and single mothers, its employees are often afraid they will not find work elsewhere. The kind of work Walmart does offer is gruelling: stores are intentionally understaffed-the strategy behind the company's legendary productivity gains-so that existing employees will work harder (Head, 2004). It is alleged that systemic discrimination against women within the corporation has denied the majority of Walmart workers the chance at promotion, a charge that is now the subject of the largest civil-rights suit in U.S.…

As a Wal-Mart employee, I have gotten to see how things are ran, how we receive the goods, how they are taken to the floor, how it is stocked, and cleaned. I have been an overnight stocker at one of the larger stores in Eastern Kentucky since November of 2010. I, like many, started working there just to make some money until I could find something else, or in my case, graduate college. I heard more than one employee admit they had only planned on being there for six months or less, and now have been working there for over ten years. This would lead one to believe that they are happy in their job; they are being paid a respectable wage, and feel respected and have a sense of accomplishment…

As well known to all Americans Wal-Mart pays low wages. They often hire people for 30 hours a week rather than 40 hours a week and provide minimal health care benefits. For the past few years, issues concerning the company have become important as well and have begun dominating the news. In particular, Wal-Mart treatment of its employees has raised many issues in public and business discussions. Wal-Mart refers to its employees as associates a term intended to bestow a more lofty status than the term employees. Many different employee-related issues with respect to Wal-Mart have been the focus of much news coverage, the company has been accused of hiring too man part-time workers; offering jobs that are actually dead-end jobs; paying low wages and poor benefits; forcing workers to work off the clock, that is to work overtime without overtime pay; and taking advantage of illegal immigrants. There are also issues with regards to gender discrimination against women, who occupy most jobs at the company. Coupled with these allegations of employee mistreatment, the company which currently is not unionised has fought unions and unionization everywhere it locates.…

Many establishments permit workers to mobilize and form unions, but Wal-Mart is incredibly anti-union. “Wal-Mart routinely violates laws protecting workers' organizing rights (workers have even been fired for union activity)” (Featherstone, 640). Unions keep employers in line, and when employees feel like something is wrong with where they work, they can go to the union without fear of being fired afterwards. Wal-Mart employees, unfortunately do not have this luxury. Even moreso, if an employee were to go to one of their managers with an issue, they would more than likely be…

Many people take Walmart for granted. They see a dirty, crowded "super-store" that is a pain to shop at when you have little patience for busy and overpopulated places. They see a store that can only be described as "cheap" and "vulgar." They see a store where only the lowest class of people shop. Some may even describe it as a "Low class Target." Those people have obviously never taken a trip to Walmart at 3 a.m.…
