Walt Disney’s nine old men were a group of Walt Disney’s supervising animators who help created Walt Disney Studio’s classic animated features such as “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” onward to “The Rescuers”. The members of Disney’s Nine Old Men are Les Clark, Marc Davis, Ollie Johnston, Milt Kahl, Ward Kimball, Eric Larson, John Lounsbery, Wolfgang Reithereman and Frank Thomas. He was born on May 9, 1912. He joined the Disney Studios on September 24, 1934. Thomas started out working on Mickey Mouse shorts such as “Mickey’s Circus” and “More Kittens”. Thomas had contributed to many classic features such as “Fantasia”, “Dumbo”, “Bambi” and “Cinderella”. He had created many memorable scenes such as Bambi and Thumper on the ice and the Lady and the Tramp moments where the couple are eating spaghetti. In December 1942, Thomas also enlisted in the U.S. Air Force like Reitherman. He was discharged on January 23, 1946 and rehired from Walt Disney Productions on April 1, 1946. His work included the wicked Stepmother in “Cinderella”, the Queen of Hearts in “Alice in Wonderland” and Captain Hook in “Peter Pan”. He also went on to serve as a directing animator for “The Sword in the Stone” and “The Jungle Book”. Thomas was also a member of Kimball's Dixieland band Firehouse Five Plus Two and he playing the piano. Thomas and his fellow animator Ollie Johnston consulted on projects and wrote many books together including the acclaimed “The Illusion of Life” after retiring on January 31, 1978. Thomas even voiced a train engineer in Brad Bird's film, “The Iron Giant” (1999) and a spectator in “The Incredibles” (2004). He passed away on September 8, 2004 which 3 days after his 92nd birthday.
